Were LCM-3's used by civilians like LCM-6/8's are today???

Posts 1 to 3

I'm constructing an S-scale (1:64th scale) and Sn3 model train layout set along the coast of Alaska, specifically Valdez and Skagway (yes, I've engaged in some "scenic compression"). I've seen surplus LCM-6's & LCM-8's used to ferry logging, mining, and construction equipment to remote islands and locals in Alaska, and wanted to replicate this on my layout. Unfortunately, it does not appear as though there's an LCM-6/LCM-8 kit available in either 1:64th scale or 1:72nd scale which I could use to construct this model. However, there is a 1:72 Trumpeter model of an LCM-3 but I've been unable to find pictures of LCM-3's being employed, by civilians, in this manner. Would any of you know if LCM-3's were sold to/used by civilian operators and/or (better yet) have pictures of an LCM-3 being used by civilians? Of course, if you knew of the existence of an 1:60-1:72 LCM-6 or LCM-8 model, I'd be interested in that as well...

While I was with the Ben Line in 1956/57 we picked up a cargo of Copra from various locations around the Philipines. If there was no jetty, the bagged copra was invariably brought out in ex USN. LCVPs, aka 'Higgins boats'. I think you would be pretty safe assuming that at least a few were used at your location. Jim

Jim[/QUOTE] @Jim, Thank you. I'm sorry for the delay in my response, I've been busy with work. While I'm sure, at the time, it was just 'work' to you, it must have been really neat seeing those old LCVP's in action like that (and with no one shooting at you)...
