Unusual Ships of the IJN

Posts 1 to 8

Most pictures of Japanese warships in circulation invariably depict imposing battleships, carriers and cruisers or conversely a plethora of menacing submarines. There is nothing wrong with that of course as they built some fine examples that represented the cutting edge of warship design and technology of their day. Nevertheless over the years I have also from time to time noticed some extremely unusual ships that were used in the IJN a few of which I will show here... They range from a hydrofoil to a tank-carrying submarine! A few I have been unable to identify. Some are very rare and you will not have seen them before. I hope you find them as interesting as I did! If I get a favourable response I have a few more I will add when I get the time to scan and upload . Unfortunately I seem to have developed a problem with the computer and am unable to upload any images with them appearing as thumbs. Because of this I have only uploaded some of them. As soon as I have resolved this I will put up some more...

Just a thought: while "Photo Galleries" is quite logical for this pic, it would be easier to find in future if it were in "Japanese Ships & Crews" - especially if you or someone else posts later on with more info on this unusual craft.

Fair point CA - but one I have considered in depth. The reason why I put them in Photogalleries rather than Japanese ships and crews are these. I feel that if a quantity of photo`s/pictures are uploaded with little accompanying text then it de facto becomes a gallery. Whilst I appreciate I have only uploaded 6 pictures that was not the intention - unfortunately computer problems forced me to abort temporarily uploading any more until I can get someone to look at it tomorrow. I do have another 10-20 to add asap.. I have noticed a couple of members putting 3 or 4 pictures in in a post and then calling it a photogallery! IMO they and any sort of post with an article should always go into the appropriate designated section. I think you will find that the many photogalleries I have created all contain galleries full of photo`s! Anyway I thank you for raising this question as it has given me an ideal opportunity to give my take on where the line should be drawn!

I will try to upload a few more...

Well that seemed to work - I will try a few at a time...

Another little batch...

The first photo in this batch features the worlds largest [at the time] crane ship which again is a very rare shot...

As usual Terry, a very interesting thread. I have just read a well researched book that showed that the Jap navy carried out atrocities every bit as bad as their army. Sorry, I have forgotten the name of the book already (blooming Woolworths memory!)
