Ship Photographs in Detail

Posts 1 to 6

I recently purchased a book titled "A Shipyard at War, Unseen Photographs from John Brown, Clydebank 1914-1918". By Ian Johnston, published by Seaforth. ISBN 978 1 84832 216 5 Although I am not a modeller, I thought it worth bringing to the attention of serious modellers here, as the quality of photographs is superb, with some deck detail shown very clearly, particularly for destroyers, of which Brown's built around 40 at this time. There are approximately 200 photos, taken from archives, none of which I recall seeing before. IMHO it would be an excellent modeler's reference book. Here are two reviews on Amazon's website:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shipyard-War-Photographs-Clydebank-1914-1918/dp/1591141893#customerReviews Hard-back, 190 pages, not cheap at £30.00, but I'm glad I have bought it.

Many thanks for the info. Derek

It's the third book by this author and I think they are really great. His volume Clydebank Battlecruisers includes many photographs I found highly useful for my Hood build. The Battleship Builders give an outstanding overview of the British naval shipyards.

"Beardmore Built, The rise and fall of a Clydeside shipyard" and "Ships for a Nation, John Brown & Co, 1847-1971" Both these books give a wealth of well researched information about these two famous Clyde yards. Published respectively by West Dunbartonshire Libraries and Museums, and Clydebank District Libraries and Museums. Again, these books have several clear photos of close-ups of ships.

I know this may seem a touch off the subject but I have been informed that John Browns kept photographic records of all the ships they built I have seen some of the ship I am currently completing and they were a terrific help to me - from the lower hull plates until she sailed on sea trials. I believe they may be in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow or the Scottish National Archives in Edinburgh if any model maker requires them. Geoff

Brown's had an unusually large number of photographic staff. At times, two photographers and four assistants. Most shipyards made do with hiring in a photographer for a launching, or some other event. Brown's in-house facility was prodigious in its output and the photographs have been saved and archived with The National Records of Scotland, in Edinburgh. From the book:- " There are 23,000 glass plate negatives and at least another 20,000 celluloid negatives plus a number of other uncatalogued celluloid and glass plate negatives". I would guess that anyone wanting to write a book for modellers would find a wealth of suitable material here. There are over 500 photos of HMS Hood, and over 4,000 for QEII for example. Alan
