I have removed a number of off topic posts from this thread. The Forum has a Code of Conduct, which we expect members to follow. This thread is for photos of Battle Cruisers Jim
Just last post about discussed. Some people with strange understanding about copyright deprive other members of interesting information. Who has copyright on photos of 19th century? I have nothing against earning money by some people by using old photos. But extent their rights to those photos - it is not just slavery in normal sense, it is not legal even in this world.

The photographs from John Brown's shipyard will be out of copyright, but the book that they are published in is not, it was published in 2011. If someone gets permission from National Records for Scotland to post them here, all well and good, otherwise images from the book abide by the copyright for the book. Jim

I said it was my last post about the matter, but you moved it to another topic. Does it mean that we should continue discussion? For me everything is clear, continuation has sense only if it is necessary for forum. PS Three years membership still "new member"?

I moved your post off the thread dedicated for photographs. You are free to discuss the subject here. You might also want to familiarise yourself with the information about Copyright which has been produced by the Intellectual Property Office At the end of the day, we are trying to prevent possible legal action being taken against this site for reproducing copyrighted material. Jim
Quite right Jim - while I understand (and applaud) the enthusiasm of many members in wanting to post photos, the last thing we need is to find the Forums in trouble for unauthorized use of copyrighted material. While strict adherence to the rules may mean that we will be deprived of some such material, we cannot afford to take the risk of legal action against us.

And in the end, it is not a matter of what is morally right, nor of what is financially right - it is a matter of the letter of the law. And in specific, the law as it applies where the website is hosted (in this case) or in the country in which the source the photographs were sourced from was published (in a general application). It might also be a matter of the law where you are located - and normal international practice can result in all of those laws applying, with the most restrictive taking precedence over the other laws where they conflict. If you disagree with the law you can seek to have it nullified via judicial process, or modified via legislative process - but ignoring it will accomplish nothing other than to create legal liability and possible injunction or prosecution by the forces tasked with upholding the law.

Well - what photos are we allowed to publish here on WNSF? According to Copyright Notice - practically none.

Members are free to post images that are their own work, are in the public domain, free of all copyright, etc. If a site gives permission to reproduce images, then source of the images should be included in the post. For obvious reasons, we have to take the word of posters that they are uploading images within these guidelines. However, if it subsequently comes to light that a photo has been posted from a copyrighted source, or a complaint is received from a copyright owner, then the image will be removed from the site immediately. Guidance on the matter is contained in the Forum Code of Conduct, which all members are expected to abide by. And, of course, please follow the Photo Gallery Guidelines posted by KC Jim
