HMS Roberts - 1/350 Trumpeter Kit

Posts 1 to 17

Hi all, Thought some of you might like to see my model of HMS Roberts based on the recently released Trumpeter Kit. My first Ships Model and Seascape so apologies. Derek p.s. The rear mast is not leaning back, just lens distortion.

I second that, excellent for any build, not just a first one. Look forward to seeing more, thanks for sharing. Jim

Hi Tim/Jim, Thank you for viewing and your kind remarks. I have just bought the 1/350 Tamiya's - King George V with many extras. Will be starting this shortly, I think it will take a long time. Although I am new to Ships Models, I have made many 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 model Aircraft, but must admit to being shocked at how small the pieces are for these 1/350 ships. Thanks again. Derek

Derek , She is looking great . Much better than when I was on her back in 1965 in Devonport. Good luck with you next the KGV. Dave H

Thank you Dave, Lucky man being able to visit a Monitor. I based my colour on when she was at Devonport. Preferred it to the disruptive camo colour shown on the Kit Box. Was a great fan of the Douglas Reeman novels in the 1960's and 70's and my favourite was HMS Saracen, so just had to make this model. Remember doing a tour of Portsmouth harbour in 1956 when my late Father, who was in the RNR, was doing his annual drill. Just could not believe seeing all the Battleships, Aircraft Carriers etc. Made this model of an Aberdeen Trawler in my Fathers memory a few years ago. Derek

Hi Derek , That is a great looking Trawler which will be viewed by many of our Modelling Forum members and the question will be "IS SHE RADIO CONTROLLED". If not , from my point of view , she would look great on the water. Dave H

Thank you Dave for those kind words. To answer you question, no, she is a static model based on Caldercrafts 'Milford Star', with many extras such as decking, rivets, rigging, new wheelhouse and veranda walkway, scratch built trawl winch etc. etc. My late father was a Trawl Skipper, and a Skipper Lieutenant of an ASW Trawler during WW2. I was a bit hesitant to post a non naval ship on this forum, but since you liked it, I have attached some more photos. Will be happy to answer any other queries. Derek p.s. For the purist I appreciate the Walker company which owned this Trawler had black hulls, but I used poetic licence and made it green, which I think is more attractive.

Derek
"Non-naval" or not Derek, she's an absolute beauty! I really like your attention to the smallest details - rust patches, scuffed deck in the wheelhouse, etc., etc. An absolute gem of a model.

Derek , Static or RC she looks great and a credit to the builder. We have many non Naval Vessels on the Modelling Forum and she stands proud. Of course , many of these trawlers becamed Naval during the Second World War and she would have had a gun mounted on her focscle and possibly depth charges aft. Dave H

Tim/Dave, thank you very much for your generous compliments, I forgot to mention, that the Trawler scale is 1:48, so that gave plenty of scope for detail. Thanks again Derek

Derek, can I say as a fellow ship modeller that this is a brilliant model, detail and weathering is fantastic. Geoff

I second all said so far, a first class model. thanks for sharing it with us. Jim

Geoff/Jim, Many thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated. Derek

Dave H
Dave, To follow up on your point the Star of Freedom became HMS Sir Galahad, which features as another Caldercraft model. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Sir_Galahad_(T226) Unfortunately at the end of its life it went to Milford Haven and was renamed Robert Limbrick; it was lost with all hands. Excellant detail Derek , welcome to our small backwash ......always room for another modeller

Thanks for your welcome and kind comments Ivor, much appreciated Derek
