HMS Tiger Battle Cruiser

Posts 1 to 12

My tiny (1:1536) model has been sitting, incomplete, since @ 1960. Finally decided to finish her. That's when I found out the info I had back then left a bit to be desired: I had built her as 660' long (p.p.), not 704'. Oops. Had to cut her apart, insert .5" section and add to @ 2/3 of her sides to get hull back to proper shape and width. It was all so easy back then; now....? So, a mere 54 years to build this miniature; a new record of inefficient build??! The other models date from many years past, but I decided to repaint the old G3/I class, and Queen Mary was for size reference. DFO :D

DFO: I don't think the build time is all that long when you look at the length of time it is taking Canada to replace the Protecteur Class of replenishment ships! Brian

A view of all eight of my tiny RN battle cruisers, "speed is armor"....almost. Yes, the bow is not shaped correctly on Renown. Rebuilt it on Repulse along with everything else, but no Humbrol paint available around here for touchups; therefore Renown stays as-is.......DFO :D

I'm still amazed you can work in that scale! I have trouble with small parts on 1/350 scale, can't imagine doing them in your scale without huge magnifying glasses and nanobots! A great collection -- you soon may be the only person to realized the 600-ship navy proposal of years back. Regards,

Well Don, at least I'll be closer to the 300 ship USN...than the USN, unfortunately, even if I need to include IJN BBs and CAs (both built many, many years ago when I could see the tiny parts). Years of being stored in layers in an old cardboard box have not been kind to masts in particular. Had to pull KGVs and start over!........DFO
..........Yes, the bow is not shaped correctly on Renown. I know what happens in these cases. For a while our RENOWN bow looked very much like BARHAM's bow until we re-profiled it. (Oh ... and the whole model as well). Keep up the good work. Sandy.

Thanks Sandy. Doing some light touch up and then repaint on my old model of cancelled USN battle cruiser Constellation; plus repairs to USN DE Voge and a JMSDF DD. Trying to shape (Voge lost her A mount) a WW2 era 5" 38 single gun mount is now tricky for the much older eyes! Next up, probably, redoing BB-64 Wisconsin to her Gulf War era look. That will take some careful cutting away. She was my 400th scratch build....way back when............DFO ;)

DFO: Refits can be more arduous than a new build. Brian

Oh how true Brian (" Refits can be more arduous than a new build.") be it a tiny model or a real warship! Just finishing my 1960 vintage Tiger proved to be far more work than I originally anticipated. However, despite the now fumbly fingers of her builder-me, she turned out fairly well........actually as good as I can now do! DFO ;)

Nothing like a few IJN carriers, too! Also, USN CVs from pre-war Ranger to the JFK. DFO :D

One must have the 3 panzerschiffe, too! Like most of my tiny Fleet, built many, many years ago. They turned out quite well, given the scale plus the ability of fingers and eyes to function together back then!! DFO ;)

Well done Denis , but as the lads remarked ...1/96 is as small as I go and with hands like sides of beef ....thats plenty small enough for me .:o
