Eaton Park Warship Day

Posts 1 to 23

Well today was a wonderful day , in spite of the weather , and I was made very welcome by the chairman of the Norwich Model Boat club after being invited down at our dear friend Sandy's[ Destroyerman] suggestion . I was extremely worried about going as "I don't Do Boat Shows " mainly as I don't consider my work worthy of exhibition , but was made very welcome indeed to a club that must be the envy of the Model Boat fraternity . The Cherry of the cake was meeting our dear friends met through the Forum Sandy and Robbie of "Winter refit" fame and as I expected ....your typical RN Guy who could charm the nickers off a nun and be the guy you would won't in your corner when the S..t hit the fan .:D Both were patient and sincere and now firmly lodged in out list of friends ....... such a shame the other model fiend Dave Hutson could not have been there :o But maybe soon eh .. Saw some wonderful examples of model making and the chairmans HMS Ocean was a masterpiece complete with all the whistles and bells that us model makers like to have fitted , and Rex Hunts HMS HERMES was such a stunning work of art [ it reminded me why I feel so inadequate as a model maker ] I have added some of todays best models , and will add some more latter . The Best part of the day ....apart from being made so welcome ......Meeting our Forum friends in the flesh ......and a cracking shot of my entry of the Day HMS Troubridge which I will show on her thread ...... The worst part of the Day ......having some carless model makers snap off my mast by leaving some kit around which blew on top of mine ....and being rammed midship on the starboard side by some one not keeping on eye on things and dislodging the forward superstructure ....which whilst only causing minor damage ....ruined the other shots taken latter on by showing a crack in the port side superstructure aft of the bridge . It was a busy day under foot with model trucks , dogs , and ankle snappers ridding their bikes about whilst you were dodging other modellers on the lake , but all very educational ...... Will show Sandy and Robbies A/C on the next batch Would I go again ......Certainly :D

Great photos, looks like you all had a good time. Thanks for posting Jim

Thank you Jim, and yes I had a wonderful time with excellent company . Not sure if its the type of people [ Ex Navy] or model makers who are not easily deterred and go that extra mile to make things work .........but I find that when you combine both you are in a win win situation ......either that or I have been extra ordinarily lucky :D As Terry said in The Wardroom thread the friends I have been lucky enough to meet have been so genuine and kind hearted ,,,,,just like your good self by way of example . It amazed me that Aircraft Carriers have come to the forefront and are so popular , there were four on show at todays display 2 x HMS OCEAN , 1 HMS HERMES and 1 USN that name escapes me :o:( .......all about eight to ten feet long and 1/75 scale and beautifully detailed ....and equipped with smoke generators and sound systems that put mine to shame . If I had any doubt about the popularity of model Warships it was displaced today .:D Here are a few that I know you will enjoy Jim ........... PS Still got special dispensation for Greta 's workshop ....shushhhhh

Hi Ivor, seems only hours since we finally met.:D The Portsmouth fraternity (mob; tribe; motley crew;gang .... select your own description)...arrived home safely about 18:00 ish. To echo your sentiments, we felt very well recieved by the Norwich Model Boat Club, who could not do enough for all of their visitors. Wonderful banter throughout and nary an air or grace in sight.;) Most enlightening of all was the complete lack of "Elfin Safety", the scourge of all hobbies and past-times. Just a warm welcome, come and float your boat and no restrictions. It was really great to meet you and Karen "in the Flesh", and most gratifying that you made the trip. When we left for home today it was with a sense of leaving many new-found friends behind. Wonderful day, wonderful hosts and a journey well worth the effort. Thanks very much for the images by the way, really sharp and in focus.;) Kind regards, Sandy.

Sandy: Big or small, all the models are superb. HMS Ocean looks like she will do well with air ops while underway. Bravo Zulu, Brian

Here are a couple more pictures ......and one especially for Dennis [ I'll let you guess which one ] At the risk of repeating myself the standard of the models were excellent and my photos don't really do them credit and the lack of people trying to flog toot was refreshing .

One of the exhibits on display was Rex Hunts HMS HERMES which was superb , and he was apparently in the RAF as a Radar Mech at the time of the Falklands [which is evident in the standard of the electronics built in with lifts working , helicopters taking off and landing and excellent sound effects . He informs me that he has donated the model to some organisation who will take good care of it and stick it in a museum case , which whilst I understand , would rather had seen it in its designed environment ....but that easy for others to say .......but a wonderful example of dedication to subject and the patience of a saint to build from scratch :o

Heres a couple more to enjoy First two are of Nimitz .....and a very good model it was two , Sir Lancelot and the others are Sandys Pride and joy out on patrol on the lake and one off HMS Troubridge [ battered ] escorting her Sadly thats all we took that are worthy of showing , as the rest of the time I was either floating me boat , or we were being entertained , looking at the Club house , or feeding my face A truly enjoyable day ...thanks to Sandy and Richard Thurston , or I would never had got there to sample the delights of Norwich and out of the house which was very welcome

Superb models, Ivor thanks for the pics

Strangely enough Ivor, your excellent images give the impression that the weather was sunny all day.;) In reality, the weather forecast for the area was awful, but we were incredibly lucky. The forecast gales never materialised, and nor did the promised monsoon. It was overcast for probably most of the morning (well done Karen for grabbing the opportunity) and it only started gently raining about 12:33 (approx).:D So once again, the site is highly recommended for next year's Warship Days, possibly in May and September. Sandy.

Quite right Sandy .....very confusing , as it was blustery and not very warm either ....well to a land lubber it seemed to me to be chilly ....but you probably thought it was spring like :) Those burgers that we had were a meal and a half ........didn't eat again till seven .............all in all a brilliant day .........look forward to going again next year :D:D
Superb models, Ivor thanks for the pics
Glad you enjoyed them , but missed quite a few as I was to busy playing , and enjoyed the novelty of not having to get right down to collect the model out of the water ........unlike our club lake Did you manage to get your Legs wet Sandy where the overflow pipes vented halfway up the side of the retaining wall .......I managed to ....to busy watching the other models and avoid possible collisions

A fantastic collection of models there Ivor, obviously worth going to see them, despite the weather. Extremely pleased that the Portmouth Crew vessels took centre stage and you had the honour of escorting (?) them around the pond.:) Jack.

Thanks Jack , Yes it was a pleasure to see their models piloted well , at scale speeds and in safe hands .but there again they were Navy men after all ;)

Sandy , Please forgive my over site , in that I was just viewing what I had posted and note that I have made no direct reference to the stunning model of HMS RODNEY that you sailed on Sunday . Please forgive this over site and rest assured that It was much admired during the display , but as I tend to do I was so engrossed in all the Carriers on Display that I forgot my manners . Loved the Naval tunes played as she passed us on the shoreline [ you kept quite about that little gem you crafty sod ] she was very graceful and commanded a presence whilst afloat .........well done Will go and polish the props on Victorious as penance to atone for my wrongdoing .....Sorry .

There were plenty of stunning boats on the water including HMS TROUBRIDGE. I suppose that pride of place was given to both models of HMS OCEAN, both from the same mould and each representative of the Suez Crisis and the Korean War respectively. And now comes your "get-out clause": neither of the two OCEAN's carried camouflage in any way, but RODNEY's camouflage must have been so effective that she was hardly noticed on the water. One local battleship Captain even managed to pass RODNEY and then immediately cut across her bows and suddenly stop!! This brute takes as long as a supertanker to stop ... scalewise. But no harm done, just an incident at sea. So don't reproach yourself Ivor, I'm just glad that my camouflage scheme was so effective.:D:D:D:D:D:D Kind regards, Sandy.

Yes But I knew it was there [ gulp] Which other battleship was it that cut across your Bow Sandy ? For as you know I was rammed midship on the starboard side [ I think when the owner saw that it was Troubridge he applied to much left hand down abit:mad: Still only minor damage to mine  I did not see who actually hit me as at the time an enthusiastic bunch pressed past and in front of me [and both yours and Robbies were alongside the wall] but as you say just an accident at Sea , and as I recall their was a battleship and several destroyers darting about ......so from then on I had the echo sounder playing so that they could at least hear me ;)
Yes But I knew it was there [ gulp] Which other battleship was it that cut across your Bow Sandy ?
It wasn't the BISMARCK Ivor, (as shown in your earlier set of images), but a similar size battleship piloted around the lake by a guy in light blue sweater top. These incidents can be commonplace at events, usually the result of a lack of concentration, or abysmal conning skills.;) Either way, they are to be expected. But surely the SIZE and DISPLACEMENT of the vessel behind is a warning to stay on a non convergent course and not to perform a handbrake turn in front of it.:rolleyes: I just hope I didn't do any damage to the other vessel. As it happened the owner had walked up adjacent to us ten minutes after the incident and didn't make any comment. All's well that ends well. Sandy.

All in all a well run event ........well done Richard

Hi All It was a great pleasure to have a few of you guys from Portsmouth up for this event, especially Robbie with his HMS Ocean he and Sandy have done a great job to her, and really captured the 1953 Korean War look with every detail in place before she had the refit in 1955. I think Sandy's 1/72 scale model of HMS Rodney was first class right down to the paint work and yes I agree it is well camouflaged.! Sorry to hear you had a near miss with her. Ivor and Karen from the Cambridge model boat club attended our event and what a lovely couple they both are, it was a pleasure to have you there. 3 years ago, since I have been Vice Chairman of the club, I have tried to push the club forward in making all our events special, now we have got the new entrance in, this does make all the difference keeping all traffic in and out of the park to the pond well away from other park users making it safe for all. We will be holding these two Naval/Warship events again for next year in May and Sept 2014 we normally have the Troop 901 Royal Marine Cadets attend if you can get them booked up in time that is.!! This enhances the day with live music. This leaves me just to say a very big thank you from all at the NMBC and you are all very welcome to attend our events at any time with out you guys it wouldn't be such a great success, so thanks once again. Robbie your in the papers up here mate.! All the best! Richard
