Lambda gunboats. Armstrong built.
Great shots Sam - a good example of the ubiquitous Rendel (or "Flat-Iron") gunboats which served in numerous navies in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Thanks for posting these.
Alpha gunboats. Armstrong built.
More great photos Sam - #s 2 & 5 clearly show the retractable 280mm gun which was the main armament of this class.

Very interesting photos, thanks!! DFO :D
Tshao Yong, Chinese turret ship. Armstrong built.
Thanks for these, particularly No. 2. Photo 1 is usually identified as her sister ship YANG WEI (I notice that both Yard Numbers are quoted:)). Both were destroyed by the Japanese in 1894 at the Battle of the Yalu.

Interesting photos..particularly the twin bladed props...Brian
LANBDA Launched as CHEN HEI Dave
In Warships for Export Armstrong warships 1867-1927 book she named CHEN HAI
In Warships for Export Armstrong warships 1867-1927 book she named CHEN HAI
Can't really argue with that Sam! The database I use states her name as CHEN HEI somewhere down the ages the name was mis-spelt. Dave

I can read Japanese ship names in kana, but not Chinese. Let`s be both variants for search purpose. :)
