Computer Browser Problems.

Posts 1 to 50

I hope this is the correct thread for seeking help on this topic so here goes but moderators, please move it if required. I use two browsers on my laptop, IE 8 and Google Chrome. There are five sites that I visit most often, this being one of them and all five require a user name and a password to gain access. In the past two weeks something seems to have gone wrong with Google Chrome and I welcome any input from the many "experts" that use the forum. When using IE8 I can easily gain access to all five sites but when using Google I get the message "you have entered an incorrect user name or password" when trying to access four of the sites but the fifth one - internet banking, I can access without trouble. I have ensured that cap locks is off when entering the text. It is not a problem but more of an annoyance because all sites are OK when using IE8 but like an itch I would like to be rid of it. Any suggestions please? Answers if any, in really simple language because I'm not really very skilled at this computer business. Here's hoping! Fred.:confused:

Fred, I have run into the same problem recently on my wife's computer which is Vista.. Have you cleared your browsing data? or have you done a disk clean up? The Google chrome will slow down and almost stop if you do NOT clear your browsing data or do a disk clean on a regular basis. That's what happen's on my wife's computer with Vista. Another point to consider which of the browsers do you have as default? IE8 or chrome? Regards Charles

Thanks Charles. I have done a disc cleanup, cleared my browsing history and got rid of all cookies but to no avail. Any other suggestions from other computer wizards?:confused: Fred.

get shot of chrome Derek

Don't use Chrome but Firefox mainly. But try these solutions from the e-How website, unless you have done so already. Good luck with it, Fred. Troubleshoot the problem of not being able to log in to any websites with Chrome by checking the browser’s cookies settings. Websites that use cookies to store information about a user’s identity and login information will not let you log in if cookies are disabled in your browser. Click the wrench icon at the top of the Chrome application window, then click “Preferences.” Click “Under the Hood” and verify that the cookies setting is enabled. The problem could also stem from JavaScript being disabled in the browser. If a website uses JavaScript to process usernames and passwords, you won’t be able to log in until you enable JavaScript. Click the wrench icon, then click “Preferences” and the option to allow sites to run JavaScript. Peter
get shot of chrome Derek
I was running CHROME until this morning,I had more trouble than enough when I first loaded this and now that I have got rid of it my laptop is running smooth again--thanks for pointing the way DD.

My old friend Greendragon has been having problems lately accessing WNS and has asked me to pass on the information below. Perhaps one of our members has some clue as to what the root of the problem is: Don, Thanks for support. Anyway the problem still exists. I am in Poland and the thing has happened while in Wroclaw, being hooked up to one of the main fast internet LAN providers I have been using for years. I have lost many hours trying to fix the problem - possibly coming from my laptop but apparently there is some bigger case rather than my DELL. Tested also two other internet providers in Poland (one of them gvt links) and also without success. Mozilla firefox also failed. WTF - in ancient military language. I can make connection to all the web/links except worldnavalships !!! Seems like a server excluded Poland from access to the web. The error is ERR_CONNECTION_RESET. If this is not very time consuming to you can you sent a message to the moderator with my kind request of help - if this may help. Regards, Wojciech As he has no access at all, I can act as a relay for him. Or perhaps we can contact him by PM. Thanks in advance.

Passwords are not stored in cookies but separately by your browser. You can try deleting them as well (be careful with that step. Ff allows you to see the password list so you can write them down). Second, some anti-virus/firewall programs can also block certain sites, sometimes for no good reason. If that does not solve the problem it could be that your internet service provider is blocking; give them a call and find out?

I've now fixed greendragon's access issues, but confirmation or refutation of this would be appreciated.

Kc: I've passed your information on to Greendragon. I'm just awaiting his response. It sometimes takes awhile as I am in Canada and he is in Poland and the time differences can make it difficult. Thanks for your assistance!

I am very pleased that Kc has now hopefully sorted out access for Greendragon. :)

I`ve been on most sites this morning and they are running normal but the WNSF seems to be a problem, it is taking too long to open a thread ( 1-2 minutes) yet all other sites are instant ---is there a problem in the engine room!!!!!!:D

Whatever the gremlin was he seems to have gone the way of the oozlum bird. Things appear to be back to normal. Dave H

Not at this end they have`nt!

We seem to be firing on all cylinders now,has the engineer changed watches!!!!

I tried to log in briefly this morning but had to give up as I was going out. Whatever the problem was, it seems to have been resolved now. Jim

CPU use on the server went up by many thousands of percent overnight. Have it mostly under control now but trying to ascertain the reason - most likely Google (or other search engines) requesting pages quickly or some form of DDos attack. We did make a few changes last week but any problems with these would have been spotted before this morning.

Had a recent update to my computer. Had to redo my passwords etc. Could not get in with my password kept trying eventually I received a E.mail from you saying someone had been trying to access using my password,? It was me!!!! However I requested a new password I received it and half an hour later I tried to get in. But No again. got fed up and went to bed . This morning it took three tries before I was finally able to access the site. Hoorah. :)

Welcome back Stan and pleased to see your patience was rewarded, eventually:) Jim

I use the Firefox browser and over the last couple of weeks I have experienced problems when logging into the Forums (as have others who have PM'd me). When I start up Firefox, by default the Forums are saved as my Home Page and I should be presented with all of the posts made since I last logged in. Other members my simply click on the tab New Posts, or click on the Quick Links tab and click on Today's Posts to get the same results. However, this has not been happening of late and the only way I have been able to find new posts was to scroll through all of the sections of the Forums and see which posts are listed in Bold type. After doing a bit of delving around the Firefox site, I may have found a solution to the problem: Open a new tab and copy and past the following into the browser: about:preferences#advanced A new window should open with four browsing options, In the section marked Use hardware acceleration when available you should untick the box, then close the tab, then log out of Firefox, then start it up again and, hopefully, the problem is resolved. This fix worked for me and I hope it is a permanent solution. Jim

The site is different on my computer I use firefox. Todays posts doesn't come up anymore and sometimes posts don't appear. To find things I have got to go back to the thread title page. I just put up with it.

You can also get to the the hardware acceleration option by opening the Tools option on the Firefox browser top line, then select Options, then Advanced and the hardware acceleration option is the sixth one down and can be switched on/off with the tick box John

However, since I went off line and shut down Firefox, then restarted it again later, it looks as if the hardware acceleration option re-enabled itself on start up so I will have to monitor it. Jim

Hi Jim , Thanks for your advice . I tried the "Restart with Add-ons Disabled" first and it worked ...... so onwards and upwards ....... until  Dave H

HERE WE GO AGAIN Can log in ...... thereafter can only send / receive private messages , or , have access to any forum via the SEARCH facility which leads me to the last post on that particular thread as now . Have tried both Jim's and Bellinitossi's solutions. Where now  Will look in again later for any advice . Thanks Dave H

I too am having the same problem every time that I start up Firefox as it seems to be be restoring itself to status quo. To find New Posts I usually have to click on the HELP section of Firefox, then click on Restart with Add Ons disabled to resolve the problem. However, next time that I start Firefox it automatically loads with Add Ons enabled, so not sure how to set the default to load with no Add Ons? Jim

I too was having problems with logging in and viewing posts. Likewise I was having greater problems with facebook. Fortunately I can call on my younger son to investigate problems.... He put me back onto Google, and all seems to be back to normal again. A.

A.
The only bit of useful advice I can pass on to resolve these issues: switch to Chrome or Safari.

Safari works fine on my iPad and Edge seems to work on my PC, may have to dump Firefox Jim

Just tried another option in Firefox. Click on the three horizontal lines on top right of menu, then click on Add-ons, click on the little cog at top of screen (tools for all Add-ons) then Uncheck the option Update Add-ons Automatically, then click on Reset all Add-ons to update manually. Jim

I've had the problem all day, so I searched for problems with Vbulletin & Firefox one entry suggested doing the following. Clear the Cache Tools > Options > Advanced > Network 2nd option on the page is headed Cached Web Content Click the "Clear Now" box Close tab Remove Cookies Tools > Options > Privacy 2nd option on page is headed History 3rd line in the History section has "remove individual cookies" in blue Click on this and a window will be opened titled Cookies Scroll down to the worldnavalships.com entries and select them all (I had 8) Click the "Remove Selected" box to delete them. Click "Close" box Close tab. After doing these two actions I logged back on the the forum and everything was back to normal. Logged off and on again and it still worked OK. I'll see what happens tomorrow when I restart everything again. John

I'm using windows 10, no problems with the system, but do get the problem on our site not being able to find new posts. I use CC cleaner to remove the build up of cookies etc all is fine after Derek (bunts)

Well, flashed my system up this morning and the problem had returned. Went through the two actions of clearing the cache & cookies and everything is now working and I can see new posts. Derek's post on just clearing the cookies is interesting, maybe they are the crux of this problem. John

John , OK on start up this morning then it went again . Steadily trolled thru the various advisors and eventually got it back ........ but for how long :( I does seem to revolve around addons and cookies but any one action does not seem to work every time. Bit like trying to keep a Fixed Service or Broadcast in at Sea at 60 Baud in the 70's:eek: Dave H

First think that comes to mind is that in my experience when logging out at the end of every WNSF session, the screen advise 'all cookies cleared!' in the large VBulletin window centre screen. The not being able to find new posts does not appear to be a Windows 10 issue because I am using Windows 8.1 and in the past week(ish) I have experienced some problems in this regard...... but ... just logging-out and signing back in again - voila!! all is well with the new posts issue - that is until just this moment when it failed:( Firefox??? One of my search engines is Bing and everything is normal there, todays post etc.

Little h
Hi Harry , It seems to be a wandering gremlin . I have tried all the offered solutions barring changing my browser [Firefox]. Every time I think I have licked it it rears up and bites me in the butt again . I am now logged on [obvious] and have also tried logging out after every session but still it appears . The session seems to go OK for a time then just packs up . Everyone seems to be experiencing it in one form or another so perhaps we are stuck with it until it sorts itself out ...... however it is still a damned nuisance to say the least. I have not experienced it on any other website so it appears localised to the WNSF. It would be interesting to hear kc's comments. Dave H

Clearing Cookies in Firefox seems to have worked for me. Since doing that, I have logged in and out twice and normal functionality appears to have returned. I will continue to monitor it though as I thought that I had cracked it a few times before:( Jim

Yes Jim , See my last , after posting , logged out and left site . Switched in again and bingo it had gone again so had to go thru all the Firefox setup again and here I am back again until either I log off or it throws a wobbly .:mad::mad::confused: Dave H

I haven't tried "find new posts", but Firefox on W7 is doing fine for me - but I just go to the normal main forum list and look for the threads in bold.

+1..............................

I now expect that bulletin warning every couple of hours and now make a restart , options and customize part of the logging on procedure ..........:o:o:(:( .... but it gets me there in the end until it gets sorted out. Today I pushed the boat out and bought a new laptop to replace my tower setup. It came with Windows 10 installed and I added Firefox as my default browser. So far so good and the New Posts function seems to be working ok with this setup, so not sure what the problem was with my tower setup. Now comes the hard part of transferring files and loading my programmes to laptop and mothballing my old dinosaur;) Jim

Good on you Jim . Here having one laptop on XP a second on 7 and the tower on Vista were I to budget another laptop the inhouse chancellor would have apoplexy , throw a wobbler and snap shut the till quicker than the "OPEN ALL HOURS2 till.:eek::D So I think aswot I will weather the storm until something sorts itself out. :( Dave H

Ok Dave, dig out the oilskins ;) Jim

Ssssh , I have chopped to my laptop after a frustrating 24 hours on the PC having to restart Firefox every time I want WNSF. Have been on a hour thusfar and using Firefox with Windows 7 and it is holding. Could this be something that crept onto the site when a lot of members were logged on and is now resident on those units. WNSF is the only site where I am experiencing this gremlin on the Internet on the PC. Hope I haven't crowed too early. Dave H

For the last several days, when I click on the New Posts 'button' across top of page, instead of taking me to the New Post page it opens up on a page with a box that simply says "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." (as if I had clicked the Search 'button' and entered some text). Is it just my computer or is there something wrong on-site? Thanks, Kevin

I've had the same trouble over the last week or so. The following day it will sometimes work as normal, but seems to right itself in the end. I've no idea what causes this.
