Royal Marine Cap Badge - Unknown Design

Posts 1 to 3

Can anyone shed any light on this Royal Marine cap badge. I've checked all the various WW1 vintage Royal Naval Division capbadges and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with either RM Artillery or RM Light infantry. I've never seen this badge in any reference book. If anyone can offer a clue I'll be extremely grateful.

John, the badge shown purports to be that of the Royal Marine Labour Corps, formed from two Army Service Corp Companies 2nd February 1917. The C.O. Maj. J.F.Cable ASC was granted a commission in the Royal Marines. The unit was basically involved in the unloading of ships at various ports, mostly France including Le Havre, Rouen, Trouville, Boulogne, Calais, Dunkirk, St. Valery, Dieppe, and Cherbourg. Only men over 41 were enlisted and a lot of men aged between 50 and 60 also enlisted to 'do their bit'. The badge shown is a restrike of which there are plenty knocking around. I've only ever seen two originals, one valued at £400 another at £600! The originals have voids where the globe touchs the laurels, the brass is most definitely 'old' brass and there is a strengthening bar at the rear where the ships prow meets the globe.
