Here are a few from the site: HMS Nigeria passing under Cooper River Bridge, Charleston, USA. HMS Nigeria, featuring signatures of some of the crew. Only got one small photo of Uganda though: Uganda, 1943. And also a pic of the crew of Newfoundland, which was added to the site a few weeks ago. HMS Newfoundland. The Queen is on board so we reckon this is likely April 1954.

Once again a fantastic display Dave. Are these any good to you? Bob.

Unfortunately most of the Colony class photo`s or pictures I have are the same ones that you or Bob have already shown. I do have a few different ones which I show here.

Here is a picture of the Jamaica which I took on the Battleaxe in 1956. She was participating in the making of the film "Battle of the river Plate" taking the part of HMS Exeter. Note the battle ensigns. Bob.

Excellent pix guys!! Mik

Outstanding photo Bob. Thank you for sharing. It must have been quite a thrill to have been part of the movie-making process.

Dick - I have sent you a PM this evening, sir.

Just a couple more of HMS Mauritius.

Comparing your two images of her Bill, she certainly "scrubbed-up" well. Quite a camouflage scheme she is wearing.:)

Couple more of CEYLON... First one believed to be 1945/46 en route home from East Indies. Second one leaving Hong Kong, October 1959.

And this one of HMS Ceylon

I've thoroughly enjoyed looking at the pictures in this thread so many thanks to all who contributed. Just one small observation though regarding one of Bob Batstigers excellent pictures in post 3. The caption under photo 2 reads HMS NIGERIA at Portsmouth on 25 Sep 1950 whereas in actual fact she is shown coming alongside 5/6 wharfs at Devonport on that date. The time would be around 1230 hours as records show she left Plymouth Sound en route to 5/6 wharfs at 1145 hours on that morning.. 'Not a lot of people know that!' Thanks again for photos. Regards ....Paul

Dave.

I well remember the film, which I saw as a youngster and thought 'must be an exciting life in the Royal Navy'.

Hi, Thanks for the pics, great ones. These ships hold the same level of interest for me as do the Town and Counties. Regards, Hugh Williams

Me too Hugh - here is a lovely shot of Trinidad one of the least photographed of the colony class cruisers....

Terry, Thanks for posting TRINIDAD (post#24) - not surprising that she was one of the least photographed Colony class - she was also the shortest lived! There are a few in the TRINIDAD threads on this site (http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=692, http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3517). Interestingly, nearly all of the photos I've seen of her show the starboard side - I've only ever found one of the port view. Tim
Bob, Great picture! I well remember the film, which I saw as a youngster and thought 'must be an exciting life in the Royal Navy'.
Hi, I remember seeing the film when I was but a young sprog. We had a plush new cinema with Todd-AO system in Nairobi and I went to see as many naval films as were being made at the time. I remember, being 6/7 at that time of feeling of 'unfairness' for the Graf Spee and sadness for her Captain. It seemed to be against that sense of fair play that we 'British' are brought up with. However, to cut a long story short, when I was a few years older I read a great book giving an account of the action (by Dudley Pope?) and that had changed my mind. At the same time I became interested in cruiser warfare and the ships themselves. In respect of Langsdorff, I feel that he may have done an honorable thing according to his warrior caste, vide. Rommel et alia, but if you read the Rise and Fall of the German General Staff, it is fairly clear that Hitler could only have got where he did through the good offices of the German Command Groups, from which the KriegsMarine was not excluded, try as they did to make out they were innocent throught the nefarious actions of the Nazi regime. Odd that a U-Boat commander should become Head of State after the demise of Hitler? Anyhow, I have gone off the track, the film of the ships in the Med that portrayed the actors of the Film were a stirring sight and I still enjoy seeing the Film. Cheers, Hugh Williams

i am led to believe the pictures show H M S KENYA at bermuda date appox1947/50

Interesting photos - very many thanks for posting them. I wonder what the story was behind the listing merchant ship in pictures 2 and 3??

the listing merchant ship is the LENA BODIN a swedish ship.caught fire and abandoned 60 miles east of bermuda on the 9/6/47 when on a voyage from new york to pernambuco 11/6/47 towed to bermuda and grounded fire extinguished and refloated so this puts the date of the other pictures late 47 early 48 as she went to oslo in 7/48 for repair. this information was given to me on another site.

Many thanks for the answer! :)
i am led to believe the pictures show H M S KENYA at bermuda date appox1947/50
Nice to see the name ship of a country that was my home when I was a sprog. I have recently bought a book on her 'In Harm's Way, by Brian James Crabb. The ship had a very eventful war and service life. A happy ship by all accounts and is worth immortalising as a scale model, if only one was available (My other interest). Thanks for posting the photos......any more available? Regards, Hugh Williams
