Welcome to the forum Grace. For a moment I thought you had to be identical twins - going on your name!

My main Interest is collecting Naval and Marine medals (at present pre 1900) In the past while adding more modern medals these two pictures came at different times and I thought that some one may have found them of interest. HMS Bermuda is self explanatory On the Back of F83 is written:- “Vosper Mk.3 Corvette – Nigeria – Build No. 2712 N.N.S. Erinmi 1979 Sea Trials” I am assuming the ship is the Nigerian Naval Ship Erinmi ? Dave

ERINOMI F83, Nigerian Corvette.

Hi david Thanks for pics of Bermuda I've not seen this one before so appreciate the post

Ludsie: At the Bermuda Maritime Museum (in the old RN Dockyard Commissioners House) there is a model of HMS Bermuda that is second to none in quality. Bermudians are very proud of their ship to this day. Brian

HMS BERMUDA - SOUTH AFRICA 1950-53 A few photos from Peter Downs, Seaman's Branch. The aerial shot is surely unusual?

Thought I'd attach one of the photo's my father has (Peter Downs) of HMS Bermuda, from serving on her between 1950-1953. What I'd like to know, aside from the crest, was whether there was any motto for the ship...?

Thank you for posting the great pictures. Coeur de Lion was the latin on the crest and I have no doubt that someone on the Forum will soon post a better copy of the crest for you. I was in Bermuda fron 1957-1959 but do not have a coloured picture of the crest. Philip

BERMUDA & HMS BERMUDA Just for info the motto of Bermuda ~ The Somers Islands is "Quo Fata Ferunt" which means Whither the Fates Carry (Us) reflecting how they were colonised by Sir George Somers in 1609. The coat of arms can be found here ~ http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/58/Coat_of_arms_of_Bermuda.svg The connection with Phillip's attachment can be seen. ¯

Found it. Philip

Thanks for the crest info, appreciate that. Guessing the motto was ; Coeur de Lion However, I'm unsure what the translation means, even after googling it..! Unsure if there was another as shown above via the linked image crest... I know HMS Bermuda only first visited the namesake islands in 1958 due to the difference in journey between the Suez and Panama Canals. I'm curious to note whether the HMS Bermuda gained the tag C52... when? It doesn't appear in every photo I've searched (unless only on one side) so from pennant52 to C52... when did this occur.. possibly during the 1947-50 refit or after..?

I am not an expert on the how or when ships showed their pennant number, it might have been something to do with N.A.T.O. but don't quote me on that. I do know that every ship I served in from H.M.S.Carron in 1955, had her number on both sides. When a ship goes into any period of dockyard time, there is every chance that the dockyard will repaint the side and in the process cover the number. It would be up to the ships side party to provide the sign writer.? I am somewhat confused as to your reference to the two canals. The ship went to the West Indies on a planned deployment and specifically to visit its namesake for the very first time.

Thanks, my father has just also made me aware that numbers often get painted over... As for the reference to the canals.. forgive me. I read it somewhere and cannot recall where. From what I read, HMS Bermuda was hoping to be deployed to Bermuda/West indies alot sooner than it's 1958 arrival. It was simply a route it took between one of the canals making it less economical to use the other. If I find it again, I'll refer it here.. My father had the pleasure of arriving onboard as a boy seaman Sept 1950, turning 18 and becoming an ordinary seaman and by the time he returned to the UK, he was an able seaman.

If my memory is correct there was a HMS Bermuda ships badge on display in the council house in West Bromwich, presume they had adopted the ship at some point? That was about 1995 (ish) not sure if it's still there?

Hello All, I am new to this site and it's a close relative who served in the Royal Navy WW2. I had noticed online that there were people looking for a picture of their family or friends while aboard this ship. I have one of my relative and his shipmates aboard HMS Bermuda, from the picture it looks as though they have won "something" it's a large silver cup so perhaps someone on here when seeing this picture can fill in the blanks for me. All the best to everyone Stoker:)

Hi Stokes Hello and welcome to the forums. If you post the picture on here I am sure that if anyone recognises someone or has any info they will let you know. Enjoy your time with us and good luck with your search. Mitch Hinde

Don't want to mess up Mitch, being new to this forum how do I post the photo I have of HMS Bermuda?

When you click on "post reply", two blocks appear. One is the block to type your text, and the other says "additional options". In that block click on the "manage attachments" box, and a second window will open. Scroll down and a list of allowable attachment types and file sizes will appear. Make sure your photo is of an allowable type and size (you can open GIFs, PNGs, etc and re-save them as JPGs if they are too big), then click on "browse" in the "upload file from your computer" section, and select the photo. Then click "upload" in the same section, and if everything works right the file name will appear just above the list of file types and in the "additional options" block on your post window. If it does, just click on "submit reply" and a thumbnail version of the pic will appear in your finished post. If you click on the thumbnail the full-sized pic will appear.

Thought I'd check with you guys first... my father states this is HMS Bermuda... but trying to organise his old images, leads me to believe it may possibly be Bermuda, Bigbury Bay or Vanguard... Any help please?

As far as I know, neither BIGBURY BAY, nor VANGUARD, had quadruple 2pdr "Pom Pom" guns............BERMUDA however did. So my guess is yes, the picture is BERMUDA.

Appreciate the insight and information, thankyou ! He called them Pom Pom Guns too...

Btw......when my ship (CEYLON) sailed from Portsmouth for Singapore, June 1958, we spent 3 months in Malta doing "work up" and one of the ships we exercised with was BERMUDA.

Some memories there then.... my Father was onboard from 1950-1953... and aside from the Malta stop, spent most of those years on the African coast... The memories he has have been enlightening, regarding the ways of the world during those times..!
