Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie - Hydrographer

Posts 1 to 3

Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie crossed the bar at the grand age of 97. Admiral Ritchie was Hydrographer of the Royal Navy when I was MEO of Hecla. When he was onboard Hecla he would ask if he could enter the Wardroom & insisted we called him Steve. He asked me & others what we thought of the design of Hecla ships & if we had any suggestions for changes to be incorperated in Herald. We visited Peterhead & the Admiral invited us to his house for a few drinks & small eats, afterwards he took us to his local village hall for Scottish dancing. No alcohol was allowed inside the hall the custom was to nip outside for a quickee from a bottle. I can't comment on his ability as Hydrographer I knew him as a thorough gentleman & it was a delight to be in his company.

Ritchie's book, "The Admiralty Chart - British Naval Hydrography in the Nineteenth Century" was/is a very readible account of the activities of the surveyors during that period. From 1953 to 1956 he commanded the LACHLAN and the New Zealand surveying service. "No Day Too Long –An Hydrographer’s Tale" (Pentland Press 1992), is his autobiography and well worth reading.

Very well known and respected in NZ as our Hydrographer and CO of HMNZS Lachlan. Our survey branch was then quite young and he set the standards to many a survey officer and men. Brian
