New Threads

Posts 1 to 9

Hi, Can anyone tell me how to start a new thread on the forum. The FAQ on this subject just shows under construction. On this page there is a button which says “new thread” but I don’t seem to be able to find it on other pages. Regards Stephen Moderators Note: New Guidance Note here

Good evening Stephen, On the home page - the one that appears after you have signed in (you must have registered first); there are listed all the main headers in blue eg. Announcements, New Members, Naval History etc. Under each of these are the forums. Select the forum most appropriate to the subject of the new thread you wish to start. You will now see a list of all the threads in that forum. At the top and bottom of the list there is a blue button marked "New Thread". Click it and you are away. Best of luck.

Hi Stephen, Firstly. it is remiss of me not to have yet got round to completing the Guidance Thread about posting threads. I apologise for this, and will endeavour to do it soon. It is in fact, quite a lenghty subject. First and foremost, it is important that any member wishing to start a new thread, should firstr use the Forum 'Search Facility' to see if there is an existing thread on the topic. We urge members to do this in orderto avoid duplication and ensure that all available information is kept together as far as possible. There is a guidance thread for using the search facility HERE. If the topic is indeed a new one, or existing threads are not suitable, then the next thing to do is to determine which is the best Frum section to post in. This is fairly obvious, although Moderators have to often move 'misplaced' threads. Bear in mind that the Royal Navy Ships & Crews section is for specific RN ships. There are other sections to facilitate 'other naval topics' and for other navies of the world. Where threads are to be of a non-factual, or non-historic nature, or not a discussion/debate about serious subjects, then posting the thread in 'Shore Leave' should be considered. This section is reserved for general chat and the more humerous topics. So having determiined the most appropriate Forum section, next comes choosing a thread title. For some reason, many members forget that the titleis there to act as a descriptive 'label' for the thread. It would expected that a thread about a certain ship, would have the name of the ship in its title ...!! Titles that simply say "Help" or "Have a Look at This" are not really very helpful in giving mambers some idea of what the thread content is. More importantly, if in fact the thread is interesting and important in its content, the information may become lost, as the search facility may miss it. Thread titles are what they say, and should therefore be in "Title" case - I spend much time correcting titles not written so. Although it seems to be a trend of the internet age, using lower case for thread titles looks a bit infantile. Using uppercase exclusively is not preferred - "shouting" the title out will not attract any more readers ...!! There are some unwritten conventions for some titles; for example, RN ships shpuld always be pre-fixed HMS, Not H.M.S or hms or any other variation. Using the preferred format gives consistency, and helps members using the search facility when searching alphabetically. Thread content must primarily be in accordance with the Forum Code of Conduct. Bad language, personal insults, and strong religious/political views are liable to being removed without notice. Threads sghould not be started with merely URL links. Such posts/threads that simply contain links, with no explanation/comment or point(s) for discussion are likely to be removed without notice. This is because when the link inevitably fails (due to it being removed/changed by the host). all we get left with here on the Forum are error pages or the dreaded little red crosses, and hence the post/thread is rendered useless. Links should only be normally posted as a point of reference, or as support for post/thread content. To actually post the thread (if I haven't put you off ...!!) open the main Forum page and choose the forum section in which you have chosen to post. St the top left hand of the page, you will see a button "New Thread". Select this, and you will be presented with a screen where you can add your thread title and content. From this page, you will also be able to upload images and other documents. This Guidance Thread explains uploading of images. There is an awful lot more concerned with the do's and don'ts, and tips/shortcuts which I will include in the Guidance Thread when I get round to compiling it. I hope this has been of some help in the meantime. Please do hesitate to PM should you need any more detailed assistance.
