Rear-Admiral Frederick William Crickard, CD, RCN (Ret'd)

Posts 1 to 3

Born in Vancouver BC on 28 November 1930, Rear-Admiral Crickard joined the RCNR as an officer cadet at the Royal Canadian Naval College Royal Roads in 1949, and transferred to the RCN in 1950 as a Midshipman for training in HMCS BEACON HILL. Upon graduation from the Sub-Lieutenants Technical Course at the Royal Naval College Greenwich in 1952, he was appointed to HMCS MAGNIFICENT as a Divisional Officer. Specialization at HMS EXCELLENT for the long Gunnery Course in 1955 was followed by appointment to HMCS STADACONA as a gunnery instructor. Other early appointments included Flag Lieutenant to Flag Officer Pacific Coast (1957), Executive Officer in HMCS BEACON HILL (1960), Executive Officer and Operations Officer in HMCS TERRA NOVA (1961), and then Projects Section Head of the Weapons Division at Fleet School HMCS STADACONA (1963). Promoted Commander with seniority 01 August 1966, his command appointments included HMCS SUSSEXVILLE (1965), OIC Weapons Division Canadian Forces Fleet School Halifax (1966), HMCS FRASER (1968) and HMCS PROVIDER upon promotion to Captain in 1972. Senior staff appointments included Course 25 of the National Defence College (1971), Chief of Staff (Operations) to Commander Maritime Forces Pacific (1974), and Deputy Chief of Staff (Sea) to Commander Maritime Command (1976). Upon promotion to Commodore in 1979 he moved to NDHQ Ottawa as Director General Personnel and Careers Other Ranks. Promoted Rear-Admiral in 1983, he was appointed Deputy Commander Maritime Command. He retired 28 November 1985. Rear-Admiral Crickard remained active in retirement and is recognized as having been influential in the academic revitalisation of the navy in the post-Cold War period. He joined the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at Dalhousie University Halifax where his research interests included oceans policy, maritime enforcement, and navies and foreign policy. He was a mentor to students in and out of uniform, and was the catalyst for the long and continuing series of annual CFPS conferences on naval issues. A promoter of public education on naval issues, he was the founding editor of the CFPS Maritime Security Working Papers series and the Niobe Papers series for the Naval Officers Association of Canada. Further in this regard, he played an important role in the 1994 Defence Policy Review in drawing all the various naval associations together in presenting a strong case for the retention of a robust Canadian Navy able to operate freely in home waters and “alongside the best” internationally. It is no small observation that the Royal Canadian Navy essentially was his life’s work. Rear-Admiral Crickard is survived by his loving wife Margaret and daughter Nancy Munro. There will be a memorial service held at the Stadacona Chapel at 1400 on 14 September 2012.

I had the good fortune to serve with Admiral Crickard ... a fine naval officer and a gentleman in all respects His contributions to the RCN/CF were significant during his naval career and equally after his retirement from active service He will be sorely missed Tim

He was probably one of the last Whale Island Long "G"s in the RCN.
