RN Minesweepers: Halcyon Class

Posts 1 to 23

Having made a bit of a boob on the Algerine class thread, I find that there is no Halcyon Class thread, so I've created one for this class of ship. The Halcyon Class Association website has some excellent details of these ships, however the site is let down somewhat by the poor quality photo's. Anyhow here's some of what I've got, I'll post them a few at a time. Please feel free to add some of your own, I'm missing 5 of these ships so looking for photo's of them. They are Hebe, Hussar, Leda, Seagull and Sphinx. Regards Alan

The 2nd batch of photo's, there were only 21 ships in this class, some of which were later used as survey vessels. Regards Alan

The 3rd and final batch of photo's. If anyone has a better photo of Salamander it would be most appreciated if you could post one. Hope these have been of interest. Look forward to more photo's. Regards Alan

Bloody fantastic Alan what more can one say. Regards John
Bloody fantastic Alan what more can one say. Regards John
Thanks very much John, I try my best. Just goes to show if I hadn't posted the wrong ship on the other thread this thread wouldn't have existed. Hopefully we'll get a full compliment of this class as others add to it. Regards Alan

Here are a few more 1. Hebe 2. Hebe 3. Hussar 4. Hussar 5. Leda 6. Seagull Dave

Nice work starting this thread Alan. Every cloud has a sliver lining! Thanks again, Clive.

Seagull Dave
Dave, thanks very much for posting the photo's, I've taken the liberty of downloading the Hussar photo which is one I can do something with. Here's the updated version of it to use in your collection. Regards Alan

Hi Alan I have this postcard of Leda plus pictures of Hebe and Hussar.
Hi Alan I have this postcard of Leda plus pictures of Hebe and Hussar.
Thanks a million Terry, nice additions. I was certain I had a good photo of Leda but can't find it on my computer, would take an age to hunt through my postcards, unless of course I'm thinking of another ship with a similar name:o Regards Alan

I have long meant to go through all my postcards, scanning the RP's amongst them [Real Photographs]. The trouble is as I did'nt do this from the getgo I cant remember which ones I have already uploaded to the forum already! :(

I know what you mean when it comes to searching for lost items on my computer. If you have Windows 7, you can just do a quick search in the search bar (upper right on my machine). I try to set up a folder for every ship (by navy, by type, by class, by individual ship) and it help me with my file searching as I can file items away temporarily until I have time to file them correctly. I use a freeware folder program that will generate the folders from a text file in a matter of seconds. I generate a folder even though I might not have a photo of that ship yet just to have a home for it when I do run across one. I can post a link for the freeware if anyone is interested. My interest in naval vessels has only been a relatively recent fascination (less than 10 years). I've been an armour & aviation enthusiast for my whole life and was active duty US Army in the 1980s. My personal interest is also a business as I sell museum displays and replicas (primarily early aviation subjects) but occasionally maritime replicas. This forum has been an absolute godsend for information on all subjects navy and I appreciate the efforts of the moderators and the forum members that keep expanding this site and keeping the information true and accurate. Thank you for the post on this class of ships as I knew almost nothing about these craft. Doug

Thanks for this thread Alan, I've always had a soft spot for the Halcyons as my grandfather had his shot from under him by Typhoons! I think it was Sharpshooter but I may be just associating the event with the name.

From Wikipedia (link):
...By August Britomart was deployed off Arromanches with HMS Harrier, Jason, Hussar, Gleaner and Salamander. They were transferred to the Le Havre area for mine sweeping operations in the anchorage selected for the bombardment of enemy positions by HMS Warspite and the monitors HMS Erebus and Roberts. They came under shore fire on 23 August during these operations, but by 26 August they had received permission to remain in the area to complete the clearances instead of returning to Arromanches. Whilst carrying out these clearances on 27 August 1944, the flotilla came under rocket attack by RAF Typhoons. Britomart and Hussar took direct hits and were sunk. Salamander had her stern blown off and sustained heavy damage, while Jason was raked by machine gun fire, killing and wounding several of her crew. Two of the trawlers were also hit...
A great thread Alan, nice to see them in a Class of their own. There are many Halcyon photos in this thread http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1374&highlight=halcyon but it would take an almighty effort to move them all here. Ships in the Class: Bramble Brittomart Franklin Gleaner Gossamer Halcyon Harrier Hazard Hebe Hussar Jason Leda Niger Salamander Scott Seagull Sharpshooter Skipjack Speedwell Speedy Sphinx Jim

Alan, re Sharpshooter post #3. I think the photo is of her after being renamed Shackleton and I have the photo dated as 1954 Jim

One of the missing ships - HMS Sphinx and a different version of Dave's Seagull Jim

Pic 1, Post 1 is the ALGERINE 'BRAMBLE' and not the Halcyon one, Alan

I've been reliably informed by Tim that the photo in the opening post of Hms Bramble is in fact the Algerine Bramble which was allocated penn. J273 but in fact was renumbered to J11 possibly in memory of it's predecessor the Halcyon class Bramble. I have removed the photo from this thread and posted it onto the Algerine thread. Regards Alan

Jim
