RN Motor Torpedo Boat Captured WW2

Posts 1 to 10

Hi after information on any MTB that was captured and used by the Germans in WW2 looking at building a new r/c model boat any and all help much appreached tassie48

If you go HERE and select 'Boat Losses by Fate' you will see a check box for captured vessels. Regards.

Main one would be MTB.314 Built in the USA by Elco as PT-56 for Lend-Lease to UK and transferred as MTB.314. She was captured at Tobruk in September 1942 and taken into German service as 'RA-10'. She was eventually sunk by allied aircraft 30 April 1943. In addition - MGB.508 was used by Special Operations to transport vital goods (ball-bearings I think) from Sweden under the name 'Master Standfast'. She was captured in November 1943 by the Germans and taken into their service as 'RA-11'. She survived the war and was 'liberated' in 1945 Two Motor Launches (ML's) were used by the Germans - ML.306 - captured at St Nazaire; re-commissioned by Germans as 'RA-9'; sunk by allied aircraft in June 1944 ML.1381 - captured in the Aegean August 1944 and commissioned as 'KJ-25'; survived the war

To add to Teds comment There were a significant number of HDMLs captured on the stocks at Singapore. But,I suggest MTB 666 captured and taken into Ijmuiden where she exploded in the E boat bunker causing severe damage.

The keel of MTB 625 is broken and forward compartments begin to flood. Torpedoes are fired and ammunition ditched to lighten the boat. MTB 625 struggled on supported by partially empty fuel tanks and was beached in the Shetland Islands. MTB 625 was lost during a salvage attempt some days later. MTB 666 reaches the Shetland Islands and finds shelter in an anchorage north of Lerwick and reaches Lerwick the following day. 9-10/6/44 58th MTB flotilla MTB 687, MTB 681, MTB 683, MTB 666, MTB 723 and MTB 684 attack Convoy Nr.1253 near Den Helder and sink armed trawlers V 1314, V 2021 and V 2022 and fire six torpedoes with three claimed hits. In a second attack, two torpedoes are fired and a hit claimed on an armed coaster. MTB 681 is set on fire and sinks. Two men are killed and seven wounded. Survivors are rescued by MTB 683 and MTB 687 4-5/7/44 At 0047, MTB 666, MTB 684, MTB 687, MTB 723 and MTB 729 make Radar contact with German vessels and close the enemy. 0132 The boats are one and a half miles off Ymuiden. 0214 VPs 1411 and 1413 with AFs 41 and 47 open fire. MTBs 684 and 723 claim hits on two targets. MTB 666 loses contact. MTB 666 is hit by gunfire from German patrol boat V1415 and brought to a stop. The Commanding Officer reports, by radio, that the engines are disabled, some men have been lost overboard, two German vessels are in close company and he is preparing to abandon ship. MTB 687, the Senior Officer’s boat, elects to make a diversion whilst MTBs 684 and 723 attempt to rescue survivors. The attempt fails due to heavy gunfire. MTB 723 receives a direct hit on the bridge but recovers station. V1401 and V1418 engage MTB 666 with gunfire as the crew abandon ship, by using carley floats or swimming, having set a ten minute fuze on a demolition charge. After twenty minutes, the charge has not detonated. A Vp Boat is hit by a torpedo and disintegrates. Vp 1401 and Vp 1415 rescue survivors and place a boarding party into MTB 666 before towing her into Ijmuiden. MTB 666 is towed to a slipway next to a mine store. c0200 MTB 666 explodes capsizes and sinks. The Germans attempt salvage with the intention of exhibiting her, in Germany, as a prize. Mr Kuyper, the harbour master advises the use of short slings that cause further damage. 1900 The hull is moved into the E Boat bunker and the doors are closed. 0700 Leaking fuel from MTB 666’s fuel tanks and accumulating in her bilges explodes. Three entrances to the bunker are damaged and one is destroyed. Half of the bunker complex is out of action for the remainder of the war. This is a similar fate to MGB 601.

Hi Tassie 48, Never really expected to find this but I think you will find the attached to be of interest. It is lifted from Conway's Warship 1992. Cheers, Sandy McAuslan
