HMS Northampton Crews

Posts 1 to 13

Here are a few crew photos we recently added from HMS Northampton in about the 1880s. I looked these up as we are about to add a couple more to the site from the same sort of period, so if this is of interest to you watch out for the update coming soon. Until then, here are some we put on the site a couple of months back. I was interested to find these pictures of HMS Northamton on the site. She was my Granddads first ship. He joined the RN as a lad, "B2C" on 26th August 1898 and remained with her, until transferred as " B1C" to the "Curacoa". Somewhere there is a photo of her, but due to its poor quality, I had dismissed the idea of posting it. However, should it be of interest in building this thread I will try to find it! She was a training ship was`nt she? The photos indicate that they are all young lads! Looking forward to your additions to this thread whenever they come to hand? Bob William Green

my father edward sheehy was on the 'northamton'july 1898 to oct 1898, then hms curacoa abt 1898 to 1899 and to other ships , acc. to his svc record. any pic. or other info. would be good. maurice sheehy usa. moenadna@mymtnhome.com

Welcome to the forum Maurice Small bit that I found HMS Northampton was a Nelson class armoured cruiser of the Royal Navy, built by Robert Napier & Sons, Govan, Scotland and launched in 1876. The Nelson class were "essentially second-class ironclads". She was launched in 1876 but not commissioned until 1881. HMS Northampton was flagship of the North America and West Indies Station until she was placed in reserve in 1886. She was hulked as a boys' training ship in 1894 and sold for breaking up in 1905 to Ward, of Morecambe. Curacoa Steel Corvette Comus 1878 18th April 1878 Launched Curacoa Steel Corvette Comus 1899 ? Sold Might have more information tomorrow when everyone gets up!!!!!!!

But elsewhere on the forum I've seen reference to HMS Northampton travelling to Guernsey in 1900. How, if she was hulked in 1894? -Dave

For anyone searching for HMS Northampton crew-members at the time of the 1901 Census, a lucky web hit nailed me Sir Robert John Prendergast, who was Captain from 1899 to 1901 (his wikipedia entry is quite interesting, including the manner of his death!) Searching for his 1901 Census record nailed the entire crew complement on-board in Portsmouth on the night of 31st March 1901. The entry appears to have been erroneously categorised as "District - Northampton" which is probably why I couldn't find it. There doesn't seem to be many people on board, presumably because she's in dock and everyone's in lodgings out in the town (sadly my Great Grandfather is not listed). Anyway, here's the list, with approx year and place of birth. They're all listed on the Census as "Officer, Royal Navy Hampshire": Robert I Prendergast---(abt 1865)-----Ireland Langton W Browell------(abt 1872)-----Middlesex William D Irvin------------(abt 1871)-----Liverpool Moore H Marchena------(abt 1878)-----Bristol James E T Morton--------(abt 1862)-----Chittlehampton Charles C Sheen---------(abt 1872)-----Cardiff Henry I Rogers-----------(abt 1876)-----Ireland Francis W Walshe--------(abt 1880)-----Ireland Arthur W Colman--------(abt 1878)-----Littlehampton Williams I Ford------------(abt 1876)-----Plymouth Patrick Collins-------------(abt 1867)-----Ireland Thomas Oliver------------(abt 1868)-----Bawlish Frederick R White--------(abt 1869)-----Cowsaud E C Child--------------------(abt 1882)-----Upper Clatford -Dave

My Great Grandfather David HENRY, could well be in the photos shown in the Original Post. It would be nice to think that I could be looking at my Great Grandfather! I have in my posession the Certificate of Service for David HENRY. He was born in March 1862 Aberdeen and a Roman Catholic. Joined Navy just before his 16th Birthday on 19th Feb 1868. Sent to train on St Vincent, then on 21st September1879 transferred to the Northampton. Entry and Discharge notes for time on Northampton: Entry 21 September 1879 Rating B1C, Discharge 16th March 1880 - Rated, Entry 17th March 1880 - rating ORD. Discharge 15th Dec 1882 - Paid off. Entry 18th Dec 1882 Discharge 7th April 1883 - Transferred to HMS Terror.

Hi My Great Grandfather's service record states that he served aboard HMS Northampton from 26th September 1879 until 18th May 1883, which has got me rather confused if she wasn't commissioned until 1881. Does anybody have any explanation for him serving on a ship two years before it entered service?

Steve, could he have been on a previous Northampton reaching the endof her time?

She was completed on 7th December 1879 when, I assume, crew would have been allocated to her. According to this site, officers were borne in her from 1879. Although Wiki records her not being commissioned until 1881, another source records that she Commissioned in 1879 for service on North America/West Indies station where she remained until 1886. The first post on this thread would tend to agree with the 1879 commissioning. Jim
