Escort Carrier

Posts 1 to 8

I started this in 1992 ish and it has been stowed away in an old shed at the bottom of the garden.About 7' long 1/72 'stand off scale'. Covered in pine needles, and was once crewed by some fieldmice! Scratch built Hoverfly. The way it's going the navy might need it! M:)

Oh goodie goodie Jim.:D I've got a sister ship for my HMS PRETORIA CASTLE mate. 1:72 scale as well. Are you going to restart work on it? She looks pretty advanced and wouldn't take too long to get her in the water. Got a handsome draught on her Jim lad, but these beasts actually sit tall in the water. Thanks for the images mate, and BZ on the Hoverfly. Sandy.

Come clean.. a human can sit in that and sail it, can't they? or should that be 'can't you'? :-) How do you see out?

You crafty old Sod ...... No more excuses now Jim .....you even have a way to get it in the water .....or is your Garden Tidal  Just goes to show there is a modeler in most of us Jim eh.... Disapponted in the Artwork though Jim can't some one help you with that ? NO MORE EXCUSES ....GET THE BLOODY THING FINISHED .....oh and better start getting a crew together ...is Greta a good Sailer ?

Thank you all for your comments, no you can not get in to it, ( although the more rebelious members of the family have suggested it would be ideal for a Viking Funeral for the 'Auld Yin', when I shuffle off the coil). I have always liked the Escort Carriers, and decided to make one. I have built quire a few models, but I wanted ths to be different. She was to be powered from a car battery and have some working features, going with the principle that it is easier to put weight on to a model than constantly strive for lightness, I made her a bit 'rotund'. I drew our a general arangement of her on a roll of wallpaper lining paper, not dead accurate , but ok for standoff. The Flight Deck lifts off, and there is also a hatch aft for access to the rudder. She had two rotating radars, with the gubbins in the island, and an operating catapult, (tested, but not yet fitted) Working lift (aft). I did lots of fiddeling with this , but was never really successful, and decided to use a car electric window mechanism in the end, but haven't got round to it yet. Another feature was a helicopter that 'flew' from aft to for'ad. The idea was to mount a gearbox on the inside of the hull with the final drive into the catwalk, a length of fine piano wire attached and suitably bent to come up and project over the F/D inserted into a Helicopter, weighted like a pendulum, so as to stay horizontal. The Gearbox should rotate 120 degrees in around 30 seconds, pause, then return. Thus the chopper gets airborn, lands and returns. As to finishing her, I have my doubts, I was thinking more like 'free to a good home', even a Sea Cadet Unit or some thing, of course I could always return her to the US, she was 'Leand Lease' after all. So there you have it the story of an Escort carrier. Jim

Well I think thats a crying shame Jim having got that far ....and no one would put the love and creativity into it that you would .....it was your dream.............. and should be YOUR Reward ;)we will all help you should you decide to finish it when you run out of steam :D

Don't worry about it Ivor, I get my creativity satisfied every time I finish a painting. Jim
