Spell Checker

Posts 1 to 11

I have noticed of late that there has been mention of a need for a spell checker that works on the forum(s). Since my own spelling is rather dyslexic, I depend on the integral "spell checker" of whichever application I'm using to get me out of trouble. Sadly, until recently I've been unable to get the "ABC Tick" spell checker icon to work within the new post dialogue box, until now. This useful little free application ieSpell downloaded activates this icon. The blurb (for the technically inclined; which I ain't) reads
ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application.
The download is available here http://www.iespell.com/download.php. Word of warning, at step 2, click the 'I do not accept' for the Install SPAM Free Search Bar if you only want the spell checker to work with WNSF. After installing, when typing your words of wisdom into a new post, click the 'ABC Tick' icon and voilą the 'Spell-checker' opens and off you go. Clicking the options button and selecting the 'Languages and Dictionaries' tab gives you the option to pick the English flavour of choice - mine was UK English. Missy

I access the ispell by clicking Tools, the drop down menu shows the ispell, just click on it.

But is there a function that makes you use the correct word? Role vs roll, heard vs herd, etc.
I access the ispell by clicking Tools, the drop down menu shows the ispell, just click on it.
Thanks Keith, on my version of Windows 7 which I'm still getting used to, I just found that right mouse click shows ispell too. Missy

Thanks for that Missy, well spotted ! Have downloaded, allowed it etc, But no icon , or mention on Tools dropdown. I'm using Win XP ... and maybe a bit thick ? Anyone got ideas please ? Brian

Role vs roll, heard vs herd, etc.
Sadly no BB242, I'm just grateful for something to prop up my lousy spelling. :D BTW ieSpell did came up with an enchanting alternative to your WNSF User name though... ;) Missy
Thanks for that Missy, well spotted ! Have downloaded, allowed it etc, But no icon , or mention on Tools dropdown. I'm using Win XP ... and maybe a bit thick ? Anyone got ideas please ? Brian
Brian I've only used ieSpell on Windows 7 Home Premium. Since installing it I've only opened it by clicking on the ABC Tick icon at the top right-hand corner (just above the smiles) of the new post dialogue box. That opened up ieSpell for use. Being a simple soul, it seemed logical to click the usual spell checker icon within WNSF. And it worked for me, but I couldn't say if it will for you but it's worth having a go to see if it does. The website http://www.iespell.com/ user instructions say
Usage instructions:

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can access ieSpell in one of the following three ways:

Under the "Tools" menu, click on "ieSpell" item to start the spelling check or click on the "ieSpell Options" to configure ieSpell.
Click on the ieSpell toolbar button (if enabled) to activate the spelling check.
Right click in the browser and in the menu that appears, click on the "ieSpell" item to start the spelling check or click on the "ieSpell Options" to configure ieSpell.

If you are using a browser based on the IE engine (e.g. AOL, MSN, NetCaptor, NeoPlanet, etc), then only the last option (i.e. using the right-click menu) is available to you.

To be honest I didn't understand barely word of that but you probably will. A screenshot on their website shows the ABC Tick (the usual) Spell-checker icon on the Command Toolbar. However, it didn't appear on mine until I went to View, Toolbars, deselected the Command Toolbar and then reselected it. I've clicked on that icon since and it does does open ieSpell. It might be worth having a go at that. As to using ieSpell on Windows XP, since I'm unfamilar with that version, I'm really sorry but I'm unable to offer a solution. I'm not IT clever just play about with what little I understand until it works. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't :o Missy

I find Mac particularly useful, but then, am I a nerd (or should it be a geek?)to be using an AppleMac??? Edna

I use Google Chrome as a browser, and there is a spell checker in it. It can be accessed from the wrench (spanner) icon in the upper left. I use it on XP and Win7.

Thanks Missy, The spellcheck icon has now appeared ... and it works @ Brian

I often use Word to compose messages, use its spellchecker, and then copy and paste into the relevant message box. Cheers:D
