Captain Douglas Stobie RN.

Posts 1 to 5

Captain Douglas Stobie died on the 16th August 2011, he saw action as Torpedo Officer in May 1945 when a force of destroyers caught up with the Japanese Navy ship "HAGURO" and sank her with torpedoes, this was the last sea action of the war. He was serving aboard the destroyer "HARDY" when the German U Boat fired torpedoes and sank her. He later took command of the C class destroyer "CREOLE" in 1950 and in 1963 was CO of "VERNON" until 1965. Shipmates from the light cruiser "CEYLON" 1958/60 remember him as 2nd in command to Captain F R Twiss, he was the Commander with the telescope always under his arm,he ran a tight happy ship in those days. He retired from the navy in 1971 with the rank of Captain and died aged 92. Another officer and a gentleman---RIP sir.

One small comment about an otherwise good article; the IJN cruiser was the Haguro and the action took place off Penang on the 16th of May 1945.

Dave - I of course remember him well, having stood in front of his table many a time, whilst he awarded me numerous days No.9's! :) However, I echo your sentiments - RIP sir.

Correct Alan D it was the HAGURO--just picked the wrong key as usual, thanks for pointing it out. Captain Stobie was serving in the 26th Destroyer Flotilla as a Lt Torpedo Officer on the day that these destroyers took on the Japanese cruiser. Scurrs--you can say that Commander Stobie as he was when we knew him kept you on the right road----you must have been a right "scallywag" in your navy days mate:D----he kept the old CEYLON shipshape and whoo betide if he found any chewing gum or fag ends lying about his decks--I believe FR T banned chewing gum aboard the ship after he took over command from the previous ships company--he reckoned that they were a sloppy lot both crew and officers.---he had nothing but praise for the ships last commission.:D

Dave............I confess..........I was a very stroppy, teenage OD, who "enjoyed" an 18 month long "feud" with Foc'sle Officer, Lieutenant Mason. This entailed many chats with Commander Stobie! :D
