Does anyone have a photograph and information about of this troopship, H.M.S.Melpomene. In April 1814 the British government sent a force to harass and blockade the American coastline consisting of H.M.S. Regulas, Brune, an Melpomene. This force on 24th August 1814 entered Washinton, D.C. and burnt the House of Congress and several publick buildings.

MELPOMENE was built at Toulon as the French frigate La Melpomene in 1792. She was captured by the fleet under Admiral Hood at Calvi in 1794 and commissioned as HMS Melpomene the following year. She measured 1013 tons – 148.2ft x 39.3ft. Initially fitted as a frigate armed with 38 guns and had an active career in home waters, the Mediterranean and the Baltic 1795 – 1809. In 1810 she was converted to a troopship and used as such until 1815 when she was sold for breaking up. 6 April 1814 – sailed Portsmouth for North America in company with Tonnant, Regulus, Brune, Etna and Terror loaded with troops; she returned to England in July 1815 and was paid off and sold in December No photo (obviously) but the NMM has this of her in 1809 - [url]http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/109937.html[/url]
