Use of Images

Posts 1 to 6

Hi, Over this Christmas period I have made a start on creating a site for my dad. I was wondering what the state of play is, regarding use of images on this site (about 6-8), O.K. if linked to this site?/ Or having read the photo gallery thread (K.c), these are all private photo's or out of copyright and O.K. Having done a little research yesterday (i.e Tineye.Google image). I can see in future this is going to be a complete nightmare with these sites grabbing up every image on the web, Whilst I can see the pirate angle god help us with the privacy side of things!. I cannot for the life of me understand why any image (say up to the last 25 years) of the combined services cannot be made exempt .(YOU OR YOUR RELATIVES HAVE ALREADY PAID!) All I can see is once all these image gathering agencies have the web library they will charge you for uploading and keeping your pictures (yes I know there is Flickr and other photo sharing). No doubt I will be shot down in flames just stating a view. but any advise welcome Cheers.........................................M:)

My advice, use, enjoy and don't break a sweat if someone asks you to remove.

aye,aye..........................Cheers:)

All photos taken by US Government employees in the performance of their duties are legally considered "public domain", and are thus available for unlimited use (as long as no claim of copyright is made).

There has been a change in our procedures and you no longer require a licence from this office nor to pay a reproduction fee. Please find attached a copy of our revised general guidance note for your information. Regards Nicola Hunt Crown Copyright Administrator Defence Intellectual Property Rights ------ End of Forwarded Message CROWN COPYRIGHT ADVICE NOTE Our processes and procedures for release of photographs and film footage have very recently changed quite significantly – apologies that our material on the internet has as yet to reflect this change. We hope to be able to update this material in the near future. In summary: MOD will no longer issue separate individual licenses for use of photographs and/or film footage. Any photos or film footage to be used by a third party will from now on be the responsibility of whichever unit or archive within MOD that holds the photos. Any photos or film footage released will now be released under the new Open Government License (OGL), which is a cross-government licence sponsored by the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI – note this body was HMSO). Details of the OGL are available online at the following link: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/ Note that the OGL allows a very wide range of uses, and is free. There are a few stipulations: Any material must be properly attributed (ie: (C) UK MOD Crown Copyright [year]), and preferably also mention the use of the OGL. There is to be no implication of endorsement or official sanction. Note that the OGL does not evade any responsibility to check ownership, and any data protection, privacy, or model release issues must still be addressed by the releasing party. The photo holders may refuse to release material or sanction use under the OGL if any of these issues are not satisfactorily resolved.
As I read it, Crown Copyright material that is already in the public domain may be reproduced if properly attributed.

Well these posts have made the minefield a little more visible to me and the forum. Many thanks to all...............................M:)
