HMS Defence Model.

Posts 1 to 7

hi everyone, im new, only for 1 reason im afraid.... a member of my family sailed and died on HMS Defence during the Battle of Jutland. Its my parents birthday this month and im trying to find a build yourself, model of this ship (not the small metal pre-painted ones) anyone help me out id be extremely grateful... thanks dave

As far as I know there are no model kits of HMS Defence or any of the other Minotaur class armoured cruisers. The nearest matches are the Drake class and Monmouth class armoured cruiser model kits manufactured by Combrig in 1/700 scale. However they differ significantly from the later Minotaur class.

My Grandmother's cousin died onboard the Defence and I am trying to amass facts about the ship at Jutland and about him. I do have several pictures of the ship and others in her class and that seems all we have to go on. I expect you will already have these but please say if you would like them. As for the model, I suggest buying one of a "as far as similar" ship and adapt the kit to represent Defence as much as possible. Things such as hull shape and turrets could be the same. Good luck with your hunt and I would love to know how you get on

I am not an expert but there seems to be quite a clear drawing (but no model) here: http://shipmodelersassociation.org/research/fam0110.htm?id_sma=1115SMA584228

There is a small (1/1250 scale, so ~5 inches long) model of Defense available from Navis Neptun. Here is their page on the model, with lots of detail photos: http://1250scale.com/NavisDefence.htm A retailer selling the model: http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/1668_1_2699872.html

I have put the above posts together and started a new thread for it here in our designated Modelling Forum/Section. :)

Everything we obtain for this site is shown on the site, we do not have any more photos, crew lists or further information on any of the ships.
