I don't know .....Must have been drunk ....but I have gone and ordered the hull lads ........but the C in C Home Fleet has told me that I can't start on it till after Christmas One thing I will have to do is cut it in Half to get her in my Car so may need to ask Sandy how he does his :eek:

Just a bit of advice, Ivor. When building it, be careful that it doesn't catch fire. The Government will surely tell you to scrap it!!!!!!! Dave
Just a bit of advice, Ivor. When building it, be careful that it doesn't catch fire. The Government will surely tell you to scrap it!!!!!!! Dave
Ah so you survived walking the plank then  Thanks Dave I will try to depict her pre Fire Time .......have ordered the Seafires and if they can get them I will try to arrange them in that era :):)

Well done Ivor. What scale is your new acquisition? I presume 1:96 scale, but 1:72 would be even more sensational. Welcome to the world of big stuff.:D:rolleyes: Sandy.

Hi Ivor , you must be a 'smooth talking*******' to get that one passed the Pay Master. Looks like you'll have to change your name as well to Bigun??once she is built. Jim

Can't put one over on you can I Sandy  Well its is !/96 Scale and bloody huge by what I have been used to and speaking to Mr Dean and the model of Illustrious that I saw today which made my mind up to "Go Big " but on a practical basis I would have a problem storing it moving and carrying it in the light of my current back problem .......but I will give it a go :) I spoke to get some feed back and they seemed to think it was practical and they gave me lots of tips on doing it ...so with renewed hope and commitment to not waste money I will give it my best shot ;) I will have to cut it in half but having seen your model and knowing it can be done successfully by you I will try :o

Just a general note on 'halving' the hull. First, pick a point as near to halfway along the hull as possible. It does not need to be exactly halfway. This is a point that hopefully excludes sponsons and other extrusions. Find yourself a big bandsaw and table. Feed the hull across the blade, ensuring that it is square throughout it's travel. Hey Presto! You have two sections, neither of which float. Having taken the beam dimension across the flight deck prior to cutting, wedge the hull section to 'true', upend it and draw an outline of the hull section at this point. Next, mark the outline on some substantial marine 3 ply twice and carefully cut out these sections. These now become your load bearing bulkheads and the means of marrying the hulls together. Very carefully insert these into the open ends, ensuring that there are no high or low points. They must be a good fit. Glue these in place very carefully (at this point I cannot recommend a suitable adhesive, but seek advice from Ron) and make sure they are as square and flush as possible. It is possible to strengthen these bulkheads transversely and longitudinally at a later date. Also, bear in mind the positioning of the running gear and motors/ESC and receiver placement. Make sure you have enough room in the stern section! There are differing ways of connecting the two halves together, either by captive bolts or a form of dovetailing. You must decide on which method to adopt. Any wiring that needs to run from aft to forward should be fed through the bulkheads at their highest point to maintain watertight integrity. Scan the model forums for advice. This is by far the scariest element of the build, so once achieved, sit back and relax. You've earned it!!:D Good luck Ivor and remember Karen's signature on this site...... Sandy.

Thank you Sandy ...I feel on a project this size I will need all the help and advice available to bring it off Do you have any shoots of the mating surfaces of HMS RODNEY that I could see and decide on what type to go for At present my thoughts are towards Dowels below the water line and captive stainless steel bolts above...but not sure if a form of gasket would be a good investment .......or over kill :):)

Here are a few Shoots of HMS ILLUSTRIOUS which will be near to the style of my future model....well I hope so anyway ...
Here are a few Shoots of HMS ILLUSTRIOUS which will be near to the style of my future model....well I hope so anyway ...
Hello I recognize this model, This is my good friend Bob Maggs model of HMS Illustrious, here are some photos of her on the water that I took. Regards Ian.

Thanks Ian , you are absolutely correct .......been toying with the Idea for a while but the size was a problem for me ......but having seen Sandy's boat I thought I would find out more .....and then I meet Bob who was very helpful ....then had a word with Ron Dean who has been very supportive to my model building experience to date ...and decision made Now all I have to do Is build it:eek::eek:

Right ....here's the point I have reached today I am aiming to build her to be representative of post 1958 major conversion to early sixties which is when I understand "Chalky" was on her The bits I have managed to get so far are of HMS Illustrious Hull and superstructure . so everything above deck 2 will be different as far as I can work out so far as Illustrious had a straight flight deck and HMS Victorious had an addition of the 8 degree offset flight deck on the port side and a completely different superstructure and funnel and Air Radar of which I have scant detail other than the Anatomy of the ship book by Ross Watton So Gentlemen I am very much reliant on you to get this done correctly ...please INFORMATION REQUIRED PLEASE What Aircraft types would have been on her in this time frame ? What ground [ or deck] handling equipment would she have had to use .....pictures ? What paint scheme would she have had ? Pictures and size of the Air radar used [ need close up not silhouette] Running and Navigation lights ? Flight deck handling and fire crew numbers during operation ? Well that is enough to start with To add to the problem at 1/96 scale she is over TEN FOOT LONG I'm told so in order to build ...work on ....store.... and transport she will have to be in two halves .....I used to look at Sandy's thread and worry now its my turn to worry After many chats it has been decided that the most practical point to divide her would be forward of the superstructure to allow for the Batteries , prop shafts and motors to be fitted in the aft section [ two 12 volt car radiator fan motors ] hence the cut line This will be my last model I think so I want it to have as much detail and be as accurate as I can get her given the constraints I'm working under .....but my models to date have been what I refer to as "Stand off scale " as I very quickly learnt from the abrasive remarks from "Know All's" at the waterside that no matter what you set out to achieve at eight feet away half of it is not noticeable to the untrained eye :o None the less I will give her my best shot ....as a tribute to our lost friend Chalky .......and his memory ...for all the good he tried to do for others who served , fell , and who's memory would have been lost ........:o I would be very grateful For anything that you think might be of help to me ................Thank you

Ivor...........Airfix used to do a 1/600 kit of VICTORIOUS in her mid 1960's configuration. Googling it might give you an idea of paint scheme and aircraft carried ? Fairly accurate model if memory serves. :) Ok fair cry from your mammoth undertaking - but might throw up clues?

Very impressed Ivor.....Please dont take the sabre to it on completion...Answer... here in OZ you can purchase what we call a 'Station Wagon'!!..problem solved( I keep 12ft fishing rods in mine)....Regards Brian

Ivor: I have the Airfix 1/600 model. There are Scimitar, Sea Vixen, and I think Douglas Skyraider aircraft with that kit. I was always unsure about the latter aircraft as Fairey Gannets were in use as ASW and AEW aircraft around this time. Brian

http://www.rnmuseumradarandcommunications2006.org.uk/984.htm Follow this link and click on Aerial array pdf. will give you a close up of the 984 radar. Aircraft carried from 63' were 809 Squadron,Blackburn Buccaneers, 893 Squadron Sea Vixen Mk1, 849A Flight AEW Gannets. Helicopters were Ships flight, SAR. Westland Whirlwind, 814 Squadron Westland Wessex. Hope this helps. My 1/96 model of HMS Fife is over 5 ft long now that I have a saloon car I can't sail it anymore, it won't fit.

Thank you so much Whalerman I now have enough detail to build one although it will be a pig to get spot on but I can now at least have something to work on as a Guide Nice Model ..about the size of HMS Manxman I think ...seem to be stuck in a rut scale wise as all three of my models are !/96 scale ......but at least you have something workable to display Again my thanks

Thank you Scurs / Brian /Brian ...for your input all very helpful I have said before and I will say it again ........you lot are a great bunch and always willing to help an idiot like me ........thank you seems woefully inadequate......but I am very grateful none the less :o

Glad to be of help Ivor.......I would not however claim to be in the same league as people like Sandy and yourself.......never got past the plastic kit level! :D Revel Kit CSS ALABAMA and Airfix Kit HMS VICTORY! Height of my ability before failing eyesight curtailed it once and for all! :)

Don't put yourself down Scurs..... it will happen to me one day in the not to distant future ............nothing wrong with those models mate Well done

Well that has been a productive day ...thanks to you lot ....and to which my thanks to our dear " Jim the brush " who must have spent hours researching the ground equipment detail I needed and even found a model of it .....thanks Guys the first list is nearly ticked off :D:D

Ivor..can't wait to see the result ..obviously you will be posting some pics in the near future.......I'm in Scurs league as far as models go....Last year my wife and I visited the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Nowra in OZ..My daughter lives a 'stones throw ' away... the Museum shop were selling 'made up' models of Grumman F14 Tomcats(can't recall the kit brand)...absolutely superb they were...(about 2 ft) in various Squadron Colours....'Her indoors' reminded me that minus a decent glass cabinet they would be a monumental dust carrier!! LOL.....Regards Brian..

God knows what this will be like, but as Chalky used to say to Karen when she was a toddler "She's a big ole girl" but mine will be in the water ...like my other models are ......as often as I can get them down to the Lake in Histon nearly every week end ...better book a berth on second thoughts Can anyone remember what her ships horn sounded like ....obviously it wasn't like the Destroyers one on Troubridge or Manxman ........so was it like a Fog Horn or Ocean going liner or something else again Please:confused: And lights did she have deck lights like a.... perry track on airfields....inset in the outer edges normally blue or something different again  Where were her Steaming lights and nave lights positioned:confused: On Illustrious she had banks of RED WHITE GREEN lights on the Port Hull and on the starboard superstructure ......Did Victorious have any or different type please:confused: see attachment for detail;) Hope you can help me here lads

Well still have no Hull but ....not a problem at present as I am doing a lot of researching and ordering bits and bobs for the finished product One of my problems was finding model aircraft sympathetic to the time slot chosen and to an accurate scale ....so having to use modelers license and get the closest to the correct scale So the ship is 1/96 scale and the aircraft will be 1/72 being the closest to scale size that is currently available..........and with help from others have ordered some ground equipment in the same scale ....and the first of the aircraft arrived today So I now have five Venoms , two Sea Vixens, one Gannet , and one Buccaneer .............Now heres the rub.................some are the wrong colour, and the others have Ark Royal insignia So any off you know what squadron numbers and Aircraft numbers would she have had on board between 1958---1963 please:):)

Ivor: Ian Allen Ltd., a publisher from the 1960s in the UK printed a small pamphlet size book under the title "The Fleet Air Arm" in or around 1962 with RN squadron and aircraft carrier short histories. There are black and white photos of ships and planes. You may be able to scrounge a copy of it at a used book shop or online. I can't recall the name of the author. I did check my Airfix model of HMS Victorious and it has Sea Vixen, Scimitar and Skyraiders on board. There are no helicopters. You should also try to track down a copy of the book "Send her Victorious" by LCdr Michael Apps mentioned in an earlier message in this thread. It has pictures of Sea Vixen, Scimitar and Buccaneer aircraft landing on her. Brian

Ivor I notice the commissioning books for Vic on the dates you mention are available on line in PDF format here, scroll down a wee bit. http://www.axfordsabode.org.uk/comishbk.htm You will have to plough through a few pages but I should think the info you want is there somewhere. Only black and white pics though.

Thanks Barry that's the book I ended up buying ....very good detail in it ....thanks for your help here I have ordered four other second books on her from Amazon .........but not here yet ....will let you know what they are like when I get them Kind regards Ivor

Hi Ivor, Two photos I took years ago of the Escort carrier model I am 'building'. I 'll see if I can get a hand to haul it out of the shed and get a pic of the complete ship A/C models are 1/72 Airfix ,but the Hoverfly is sctatch built. The model was placed on top of the hedge (see bottom left of the photo down the deck) so as to keep a clear back ground. Jim

Well done you .............I can see some serious competition here  Very well done Jim a credit to you Kind Regards To you both

Fear not Ivor, this project was started about 1986, since then the RN has built, operated and scrapped fleets of warships. I don't see an end in sight, in fact I was thinking of it being 'free to a good home', or the local Sea Cadets. Jim

Don't give up Jim, you may yet get started again!:) Ivor, well done on your research mate, good to see that you're studying your project so deeply. Look forward to the updates, particularly as my current 'winter refit' oppo is ex VICTORIOUS himself. Sandy.

GOOD NEWS......collected the hull today will take some pictures and show you the starting point of the build soon

Looking forward to that Ivor...Brian

At last I can unveil the hull and half way joint that I mentioned before . Overall size of bare hull is 2360mmx330mm [ thats 92" x13" to people of my age] at her widest point .....bearing in mind that this does not include the deck overhang at the bow and stern and 210mm [81/4"] in height to the underside of the flight deck As previously mentioned C in C [ Home Fleet ] has told me that I am not to start her until the New Year....... So being the Good Soul that I am ..I have only bought the Hull and the Marine Ply for the Deck / Bulkheads/ side Braces , and ordered the prop shafts and bought a heavy duty servo with metal gears for the rudder .,Five Sea Vixen,1 Gannet , 1 Sea Venom,, 1 Buccaneer , one of the two Car Fan Motor's as I have used up all my Birthday / Christmas pressies for the foreseeable future and one carrier tug., ....yes I know but don't tell my wonderful Woman . I estimate it will take me about a year to do the bulk of the work and another to do all the detail bits and bob's Going to have a quick tot now before she comes home and reads this and beats me with a Cat o Nine tails

AS a matter of interest Ivor who produced the hull ????? Dave H

A Very Good friend ..Ron Dean of Deans Marine nr Peterborough who along with Dave Milburn of Action Electronics have given me a lot of help over my brief model Boat experience , and were both model boat builders before going into modelling as a business themselves :)

Hi Ivor, bet you took a deep breath when you started cutting the hull, you can let it out now, it looks fine. There is a photo in the commission book, of a young sailor cutting the cake, the aircraft on the cake were made by me, one of each squadron type, this was before all the resin convertion kits , so the Sea Vixen was a DH110 (Frog I think), balsa nose job, and the AEW Gannet had a balsa fuselage and radome. The NA39 had a balsa nose, and the Wessex was a 'tarted up' US Sikorski S58, again with a balsa nose, side numbers etc painted on. I was glad it was only one per squadron ! Keep up the good work, and make sure you have nice Crissie Pressie for the good lady Jim.

Thanks Jim .......Chrissie present Sorted .........And I'm chaffing at the bit to get started...but I gave my word not to start it so ......I will honour her request ...........................................Rather than Die:eek:

Ivor...Thanks for the Pics....Don't let the MOD see it!!.....it will become an addition to the RN'S sorely depleted Fleet and immediately 'mothballed'..looking forward to Commisioning....Regards Brian

Will be a little while yet ...but will keep you posted Brian

Great news Ivor ..... you've got a starting point!:) Looks to be a good join between forward and aft sections of the hull. Good alignment locators too.;) Don't tell Karen, but there's lots of covert preparation could be done before New Years day.:D I'm sure your mind is buzzin'. Is Karen assisting in any way (it's good to get ones spouse involved, no matter how much or little the contribution). Wishing you every success with the build and also Seasons Greetings to you both. Kindest regards, Sandy.

Hi Sandy.. I am very much involved.. but if you could see the size of the Hull it does not even fit across the dining room table...:eek: where we are going to put it when Ivor has completed it...We have Troubridge and Manxman on the wall already..the Vic we will need a crane to lift it up..:D:D but I am really looking forward to seeing the out come of it.. as my Dad use to say "she's a big ole girl'... Karen

Ivor, My friend you have your work cut out for you and i know your model will be top notch!. You have some good support here and as always cannot wait to see your end result. It has been awhile i know....i have missed a lot and now trying to catch up sort of speak. Kindest Regards Charles

Hi Ivor You could always pretend that you were reading that well thumbed copy of JACKSPEAK Good luck. Mitch Hinde

Kindest Regards Charles
Hallo My Dear Friend Charles , where have you been hiding :) Yes every time I look at the hull I think "You may have bitten off more than you can chew here mate "...but as you point out I can tap into the worlds best source of ref here ....the people who worked on them .......:D.....and people accustomed to working on large models of the same Scale ..........but alas all the peripheral bits are sadly not available in 1/96 ....so there will be a little compromise to take on board as I progress Great to here from you Charles
