Need some help with a paint plan for this ship at the time of North Cape. I have reliable information for the painting of this ship in all respects save one; the deck, in particular the wooden portion of the deck. What I have is contradictory and the numerous black and white photos I have from a variety of sources aren't helping to clarify things! At the time of North Cape was the wood decking bare or was it stained/painted some colour (like dark grey or whatever)? Thanks in advance. :)

I believe that the DOY ,at the time of the North Cape action was painted as follows: Hull = G-10 very dark grey upperworks= B55 green-blue All decks = MS3 med grey green Hope this helps Phil

Yes, it does. Thank you very much. :) BTW, what is the source of your information?

I believe I got that from the Ensign book on the KGV`s,(as far as I can Remember!)glad to be of help Cheers Phil

Another book I need to track down, then. Oh well......... Thanks.

A happy confluence of book purchases and other books arriving via inter-library loan has produced answers of a sort. I have the Profile Morskie on PoW which, of course doesn't help me here! I don't know if they did an issue on DoY or the class. Ensign 5 on the KGV's states that almost always the wooden decks were left as is with metal decks painted AP705A Dark Grey. Note it said "almost always"! It did not provide further details, at least as far as I could see! (It still was worth getting!) :D Another Polish-language publication, Morzi Staty i Okrety, in their issue on the KGV's repeats the above from Ensign 5. :o Raven and Roberts book British Battleships did not mention decks when it dealt with camouflage (at least I could not find any information on the subject in my copy). :( Robert Dumas' 4-part series on the KGV's published in "Warship" was quite clear on everything to do with camouflage EXCEPT decks! My notes from V. E. Tarrant's book don't mention anything on camouflage so I will have to track that book down again and check. The Shipcraft series book on the KGV's does provide an answer. It states quite clearly that at the time of DoY's battle with Scharnhorst the wooden decks were painted or stained a dark grey but it did not say which one. Phil Reeder says it was MS3, which is also AP705B medium grey or medium grey/green and this would seem to fit the bill here. Thanks to all who answered my question. If anyone finds anything saying if any of the KGV's had painted decks then I'd like to hear about it.

An Edit and a correction. First, It's Ensign 1 on the KGV's; Ensign 5 is on the Town class cruisers of WW2. :o Secondly, Ensign 1 does say in a photo caption for a photo of DoY after her 1943 refit that the decks were painted either a dark or medium grey. :D So there!
