Posts 1 to 2

Edited from"The Eastern Daily Press" (EDP), 8/13) P A crew member of the tug "Chieftan" was lost overboard on The River Thames off Greenwich Saturday morning when the vessel capsized and sank after apparently hitting a buoy. The Chieftan was the front tug of two towing a barge laden with a large crane and sank within minutes of he collision. Two other crew members were recovered from the water, The second tug attached to the barge remained safely afloat with crew members assisting at the accident. A major search and rescue operation was launched for the missing crewman coordinated by The Woolwich based London coastgaurd but about four hours after the sinking the search involving River Police,The Port of London Authority the Fire Brigade and lifeboat crews was called off. derek-L/Norfolk.

A sad tale-poor chap must have been carried out to sea by the strong tidal current- assuming that it was on the ebb.:( jainso31
