Young Seafarers

Posts 1 to 3

The MP for Suffolk Coastal Areas Dr. Therese Coffey, last week launched "The Seafarers Apprenticeship Scheme" in the Houses of Parliament. To provide a training programme for young people who want a career at sea. The programme will be led by The Merchant Navy Training Board and involves Shipping Companies.Unions.Colleges and the Maritime & Coastal Agency--derek-L

Anything that offers young people a career is worth applauding but at the risk of sounding cynical one wonders if there will be jobs for them after training. My youngest son drives ships for P and O and tells me that the jobs for our people are getting fewer and fewer. Companies, it would seem, are loath to employ British seafarers as foreign ones are much cheaper to employ. best wishes Jan

Jan your son's comment so true and in so many other occupations these days, dont know how we going to find the answers to encourage our new generation enthusiasm. Viz also recent RAF aircrews with no planes after long expensive training.--derek-L
