French La Bastiaise

Posts 1 to 4

Hello Although this corvette was French, she was lost on her trials off Hartlepool. Contemporary accounts say that several British dockyard personnel were lost in her. While I have all the French and the British Middlesbrough pilot, I show no other Brits. Any ideas, guys? don

Don Can you give a date to look for?

Hello qprdave The ship struck a mine on 22 June 1940. The only Brit I have is Thomas Hunter of the Light House and Pilot Authorities (Middlesbrough). He appears on Tower Hill. All best don

Hi, I've recently been reading my grandfathers journals (JB Smithson). He worked at Smiths dock and was involved with the design of the ships built there. This should be of interest to you - "The second ship finished was the `La Bastiaise’. This ship was allocated to the French and they sent a French crew and an overseer for it. This ship had few preliminary trials. The final trial trip in Tees Bay on Saturday, 22nd June 1940. A large number of men were aboard for the trial, including the Engine Works Outside Manager (Mr Dobson), Shipyard Outside Manager (Mr Townsend), 3 leading draughtsmen (Mr Gent, Powell and Hall), British Corporation Surveyor (Mr Balls) and many representing outside contractors, etc.. One of the draughtsmen had specially requested to attend this trial as he had been mainly responsible for the arrangement work in the main machinery space of the Corvettes." ... "It was a sorry search for me for none of our people were among the saved (ie. Smith’s Dock men). The French supervising officer was saved and about 13 others, British and French. there was little or no hope of more. British French Total On Board 25 49 74 Lost 18 41 59" Obviously a traumatic time for my grandfather and a great tragedy. Can I ask why you're looking into it? Thanks. Peter.
