RN Destroyers: W & Z Class

Posts 1 to 23

Having searched the forum I am unable to find any gallery of these ships, although some do appear in the thread regarding frigate conversions. So I've started this thread in the hope of a few more photo's of this class of ship. To begin here's a splendid photo of Zambesi recently acquired by myself. Please feel free to add to this thread. If anyone wants a higher res copy of this please send a PM. Regards Alan

Great photo Alan and thanks for starting this thread. I have always regarded the 'S' to 'CA' classes of RN destroyers (with the possible exception of the late war 'Tribal fit') to be the best looking destroyers ever built by any navy. The latttice masts (tall or short) seems to have added a certain something to their appearance. The 'CH' to 'CR' classes always seem to be missing guns and torpedo tubes here or there and look to be incomplete. That being said, I am aware of the reasons why that was so. Thus no need for further discussion on that aspect. Oddily enough that you have posted a photo of HMS Zambesi. While looking up the 'Destroyer' heading in my father's late 1950's edition of 'The Encylopedia Britannica', I saw my very first destroyer photo. It was of HMS Zambesi'. I was about 8 or 9 at the time when just about every book I read was older than I was. :o Rather smallish but my attempts on enlarging it were not successful: Monty

Alan Good photos of this very underused class. Do you have Zanzibar ansd Zodiac ? If so would like to download a copy. Regards Gerry

Great photos, Alan The direction that HMS Whelp's guns are pointing seems to me that she is a bit camera shy! Dave

Many thanks for the perfect photos, most of which I had not seen before. A special thank you to Alan for the large Zambesi photo. Monty

Many thanks for posting your fine set of photos Alan. Jim

Thanks for the comments so far folks, I'm afraid I don't have any photo's of either Zanzibar or Zodiac for that matter and would appreciate any photo's of them myself. Regards Alan

Here are 3 more additions to the collection. Hms Wager, Hms Wessex and Hms Wrangler. Regards Alan

Re Picture of HMS Wrangler Post #12 Does anyone know what the contraption is above, what I imagine is, the director just aft of the open bridge. It has 6 rods protruding from it. Dave

Wrangler was one of his ships but I need to check out his service record for dates. May also have photos. I think he may have been on Convoy Duty in North Atlantic and Russia. Regards Amoscott

Here is one of Wizard.

By 1961 Wizard had been converted to Type 15 and was serving in the 17th Frigate Squadron, the Dartmouth Training Squadron; in the ships crests thread i have posted her crest. I think this was her final commission before retirement. tim
A few more for the collection. Regards Alan
excellent good views for the ship modeler....drives me nuts when there is no side number visible...any dates you can add in late 40s... 1950s??? Thankyou so much love the British Navy destroyers all types....

Here's another couple of photo's of 'Z' class destroyers, a nice view of Hms Zephyr and one of Hms Zealous. Still looking for a decent sized photo of Zodiac if anyone has one please. Regards Alan
