Hereunder details of the life and death of Nicholas Monsarrat- WW2 Corvette/Frigate Captain and post war Author of "The Cruel Sea" and other naval books http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Monsarrat

Hi Jainso. If he is remembered for nothing more,"The Cruel Sea" will be a fitting epitaph for this great Author and a man who had been there and earn't the "T" Shirt

Thank you Sean for your short; but eloquent epitaph to my hero. jainso31:)

Just didn't get any better than "THE CRUEL SEA".....outstanding! DFO :D

I heartily recommend his two volume autobiography; Life is a Four Letter Word.

Snorkers! Good Oh! :) The Cruel Sea was one terrific book. Peter PS: I shall get myself a copy of that, Alaric.

Jainso,THE CRUEL SEA,one incredible book - "perhaps he has a bun in the oven" - thanks for highlighting it and it's great author. Sid

I am so pleased that you all (Designeraccd,Alaric.barracuda and Berry) enjoyed my little attachment to a great guy. jainso31:)

In the early 1950's there was great excitement in our house in a town in the Natal Midlands and it involved Nicholas Monsarrat. Was he a visitor to the town (possibly) or did he visit our house (most unlikely). Whatever the case, seeing his name always brings back a fuzzy memory and I am sorry that the man behind it is no more. Brett

Thank you Brett for sharing that story about Monsarrat with us -he was a good man.:) jainso31

Master Mariner is one of my favourite books, it is a shame he never got to finish it

I remember him for his evocative "Three Corvettes", in particular the laconic Royal Navy humour that came across in the signals sent and received from his bridge. Examples: The Captain receives a signal and turns to the Lieutenant Monsarrat "No. 1; commence hostilities against Japan!" "Aye-aye Sir! Starboard Ten!" The escorts wait for a small minesweeper to clear the channel before entering harbour. There's an explosion and a huge waterspout blots out the sweeper. As the waterspout subsides and the sweeper comes back into view he sends "That was close!" to which the sweeper replies "What was?" Minesweeper announces "Channel clear". Senior ship then sends "After you". He replies with "No Sir, after you" and gets "No, no. I insist" in return.

A nice wry anecdote Forester-thanks for sharing it with us.It was funny I have to say=do you any more like that??

"Three Corvettes" is full of them, jainso. Lookout: "Aircraft approaching. Green 30" Lt. Monsarrat (for the benefit of the crew) "The aircraft approaching from our starboard quarter is a Hudson of RAF Coastal Command..." Lookout: "Stick of bombs coming down, Sir!" He could tell them against himself. A sign of a well adjusted man.

You can say THAT again Forester-I have read this book but age has sadly erodad the capacity to remember. jainso31
