A detailed book about the battle of Periprava will soon appear in the US. The soviet plan was to attack in two directions: Chilia-Tulcea and Constanta-Cernavoda in order to slow down the german offensive in center and destroy the oilfields near Ploiesti. The battle of Periprava and the heavy losses during the assault of Constanta have led the Soviets to abandon this plan.
I never hear about plans to drive to Constanta in 1941. Is this book supported by soviet documents?
A soviet BKA was seriously damaged during the night of June 25/26, 1941 near Tulcea. The ship wreck was descovered later at Jibrieni; she was repaired and renamed ship No.7 under roumanian flag. At least five ships were lost by the soviets during the battles of Periprava and Chilia Veche (BKA 102, BKA 111, BKA 113, BKA 124, BKA 134). bibliography: Rohwer I., Hummelchen G.-"Chronology of the war at sea 1939-1945"
Works of Rohwer known for its multiple errors. + AFAIK V-7 or No.7 was romanian own design (two ships built in Galati in 1943, V-7 and -8). Ex-soviet was V-12, perhaps same BKA i mentioned before (BKA Nr.114, numbered 204 from 22.6.41 but old designation still used in documents). Next month there was soviet casualties on Danube, and two of them on Periprava. 6.7.41 Cutter MO-2 sunk on mine in Danube mouth. 8.7.41 BKA Nr.112 (from 22.6.41 - Nr. 102, but in documents old designation used) damaged by romanian artillery fire sunk by its crew on Kagul lake togheter with Watch cutters Nrs. 212 and 214. Same day watch cutter Nr.216 and schooner Nr. 3 scuttled in Reni. 11.7.41 BKA Nr.113 (103) and 134 (501) both sunk by artillery near Wilkovo (this was indeed landing near Periprava, but not first). This day was diversional attack on Periprava, which totally failed. Losses, besides two BKA, was 18 killed and 20 wounded. 18.7.41 BKA Nr. 133 was sunk during beak out from Danube 20.7.41 BKA Nr. 203 (504) - sunk near Petrovka while supporting ground battle. + some BKA was damaged during June, but not sunk. This is BKA Nr. 112 on 24.6.41, BKA Nr. 134 on 25.6.41, Nr. 113 on 1.7.41. BKA Nr. 124 never exist during war (renamed in 131 on 4.8.40). BKA Nr. 111 destroyed by its crew 27.7.42 on Manytch river. Source: Secret book of MO SSSR about losses in Great Patriotic war 1941-45, Moscow, 1959. If you wish i can give full title.

Great pictures i didn't realize the Romanian navy had that many warships in WW2. Thanks for sharing

A very fine exhibition of pictures and details from various subscribers-showing us a glimpse of a Navy; of which so little is known to "the man in the street" Many thanks for sharing with us.:):) jainso31

This is a picture of an soviet destroyer simmilar to RRN R-Class. The question is it haves different number on board like REGELE FERDINAND & REGINA MARIA (LIKHOI & LETUCHY after 1944). I think it is an R-class destroyer or the soviets had Shakespeare class destroyers !

Is this a wartime photo taken after change of armament - reports say that one 4.7" was landed?
The "B" gun was replaced before august 1944 with an 88 mm gun.
Thank you. That pair of destroyers are the only warships, as far as I am aware, to use playing card symbols instead of pendant numbers on their hulls. What was the origin of that practice?

Thank you MUGURCL ! You also elucidate me regarding the smaller gun of R-Class destroyers .

Dear PATROCLUS ! The four simbols of playing cards were used for the two pair of destroyers of RRN during WW2 , M-Class (MARASTI & MARASESTI) and R-Class destroyers (REGELE FERDINAND & REGINA MARIA) . Unfortunately I don't know the origin of these simbols . Thank you for your concern about Romanian Royal Navy !

I wanna make a completion to my last post . The simbols of RRNavy's destroyers were the aces of the playing cards : REGELE FERDINAND-Cup , REGINA MARIA-Spade , MARASTI-Diamond and MARASESTI-Club . (I hope I named correct the simbols of playing cards , I don't play poker in english!!!)

I found old pics of RRNavy's river minesweepers during WW2 . They were armored boats , equipped for magnetic minesweeping (magnetic mines dropped by aircraft) . I think this boat is verry similar to czehoslovakian river minelayer who served on Danube during WW2 in RRN (in this thread on page 2) and it is possible to be the same class of ships !

Minelayer AURORA was a ship with an interesting destiny . The ship was built in 1909 in Taranto , named BASILISK and was used like tug and passenger-ship . During WW1 KUK BASILISK became minelayer in Adriatic Sea in Austro-Hungarian Navy . After war KUK BASILISK was transfered to French Navy and renamed AURORE . In 1922 the ship entered in Romanian Royal Navy , named AURORA , until 1927 , when was transfered to merchant Navy . In 1939 AURORA was reactivated as minelayer in Romanian Royal Navy . There is a legend regarding this ship : gunboat REMUS LEPRI (Friponne-class) sunk after hitting a mine lay by AURORA . After this event the mines layed by minelayer AURORA were with the warhead inactive . Is that true ?
picture number 4: she is not a romanian Vosper class torpedoboat.
Why picture number 4 is not an romanian VOSPER ?
Why picture number 4 is not an romanian VOSPER ?
RRN had only 3 Vosper class torpedoboats. They were identical. The soviet navy also had Vosper class units. The differences between the ships that appear in photographs seem obvious:
