Hi Duro.Thank you very much for your answer. It just puts to rest a little thought in my mind. Many Regards Steve.

Hi Duro. Thanks a million for those photos. The crew look as if they have been on a very long patrol. Were they calling into this port because the Italian ports were becoming unreachable for them.Or perhaps they were thinking of surrender. Many Many Regards Steve.

My BELOVED !!! NMS AMIRAL MURGESCU and NMS MARASTI !

Dear STEVE ! In Black Sea germans opperated with submarines ( also with raumboats, schnellboats, barges etc.) .We supported the axis effort with our fleet and germans ships get shelter in Constanta and Mangalia harbours until 1944 . This german crew is just ashore after a patrol mission in Black-Sea .

Hi Duro. Thanks a million for your answer.I knew they operated extensively in the Med.But I did not realise they also patrolled the Black Sea. Many Many Regards Steve.

Dear dorupantos, I'm looking for as much descriptive biography of adm. Bălănescu as possible (might be in Romanian - no problem with that) and a good photo of him which I can use in an article about Polish proposal of minesweepers for Romanian Navy. Could you help? Andrzej

Dear Crolick ! Unfortunally I only know that Amiral (Vice-Amiral) Ioan Balanescu was in command of VEDEA , TELEORMAN (1902) , SMEUL (1903)-torpedoboats , gunboat GRIVITA (1906) , river-torpedoboat CALINESCU (1910) , cruiser ELISABETA-without guns , the guns of ELISABETA cruiser were taken and used like coastal battery (1917-1919) . During 1934-1937 Vice-Amiral Balanescu was commander of RRNavy . (you can veriffy the aquisition of RRN-ships in that period and find if Balanescu had a major contribution or not). Also Amiral Balanescu decided in 1938 , in Romanian Naval Ligue , to purchase the construction of Constanta-Aquarium (with river and ocean fish). If you are not in great hurry , in few days I will help you with some photos of some class of ships leaded by Amiral Balanescu . Best regards , Doru

Dear Crolick , Here are the only two photos that I could find of admiral BALANESCU . I'm interested about your article because BALANESCU (in my opinion) was not the greatest admiral of RRN and he doewsn't take part of militarry action !

I was indebted regarding TIRPITZ-baterry in Constanta-harbour during WW2 (page 6 RRN , coastal batteries) . Here is a photo of the german 280mm guns of Tirpitz-Baterry protecting romanian coast during WW2 , at Lazu-Agigea . These guns fired on soviet destroyers MOSKVA and HARKOV and push them thru theb mynefields during the TUZLA-battle .

As ussual I forgott to post the photo !!! Shame on me !

Thank you for your correction .This week i will go to Braila and find Sabarelu and take more pictures . Considering the age of the ship he was involved for sure in WW2 in transports on Danube. The identification took place on 05.05.2011 and the dive was made together with 3 GUE divers from Russia and Ukraina. Respiro Society is proud to discover this wreck after 70 years from her sinking. We filmed and took pictures, a press-conference is scadualed for next week. On 26 of June 2011 we plan a joint expedition together with our Russian and Ukrainian friends to pay our respect to Moskva and it's crue, a bronz comemorative plaque will be attached to the 150mm stern canon. The wreck is broken in 2 parts, a big explosion took place before the sinking, the stern section is intact from the first engine to the propelars. Cannons, machine-guns and torpidotubes are well preserved and in place. Is laying with an inclination of aproximate 30-35 degrees on port side. The bow section is upside-down, tower and front canons buried in the sand. In our opinion the sinking is due to a mine. The explosion of the mine detonated the front boilers or amunition compartment and broke the ship in 2 parts. We hope to confirme this theory on the folowing dives.

Hello dorupantos, I just wanted to say thank you for your very generous sharing of information on this forum. I will be building a small scale model of the Smeul as she looked in the Black Sea in 1943, and the photos here have given me all I need. Thank you! best regards Aris K.

First, Constanta raid was on 25-26 june, not 21 (this is even before war begin!!). Force consisted from 2 leaders, cruiser and only two destroyers (SOOBRAZITELNIY and SMYSHLENIY). TASHKENT and PARIZSKAYA KOMMUNA didn't participate. KHARKOV received no hits from german-romanian fire, only two near-miss from coastal guns in 5.28msk (4.28 DSZ), which caused radical drop of power. MOSKVA didn't received any hit too. Only one from saved crew said that one shell cut off mast, but no any other confirmation exist. All crew from MOSKVA say that leader hit a mine. Explosion happen near board opposite from shore. Nor KHARKOV, nor VOROSHILOV hit mines. V. not damaged at all, KH. leave firing zone with 6 knots at 5.55msk. Some air attack didn't damage her and in 9.30 she can steam at 26 knots.
For Crolick ! Pictures of SMEUL-class torpedoboat . At the begining of 20'century Balanescu was the commander of torpedoboat SMEUL .
On one of these ships (Sborul, Naluca, Smeul) served my grand grandfather. I have very fiew info about him. His name was Pascu (alias Machedon) Gheorghe, he fought on one of these ships (don't know the name), he was decorated four times and, after the war, he was Chief Pilot of the River Administration of Lower Danube (AFDJ). I couldn't find any more info about him and I would be grateful for any info. Family legends say that he was in comand but I'm not sure about that. Returning to the ships, they were french made, they were very fast (Smeul reached 26knots on calm sea) but they had poor stability, with a tendece to capsize on rough sea. We lost Smeul that way, near Jibrieni. They were used most on Danube, for fast patrol, recon, raids and oxigen supply for river torpedoboats. Only Smeul saw action on Black Sea, against german subs, near Constanta. Also Smeul was involved in harassing action against german/bulgarian troops, after we lost Dobrogea, and made several raids behind enemy lines, in cooperation with the newborn Romanian Secret Service, for capturing enemy oficers and documents. After de war, Naluca and Sborul were scraped and their names were taken by torpedoboats recevied as war compensations. To avoid confusions, the new torpedoboats were named Zmeul, Naluca & Zborul (or the Z torpedoboats) and the first shipes were named the S torpedoboats.

The best info can be found in the book "Glory and Drama - Romanian Navy in WWII", by Damaschin & Craciunoiu, also a very accurate draw of the operation can be found there. Also, the draw posted by Doru is partially wrong. I'll try to be brief. Moskva & Kharkov attack was not isolated, it was part of a combined Soviet action destined to block the Danube mouths and to destroy Constanta harbor. In the same time with Constanta attack the Soviets forced the Chilia branch of Danube, aiming to reach and block the Sulina branch. They engaged in bloody fights with 2 Romanian Marines battalions, with different results: - they captured Chilia Veche and killed/captured about 350 marines from 15th Marines Battalion but couldn't penetrate further south to Sulina Branch; - at Periprava they were repulsed with heavy losses and 4 armored boats sunk by 17th Marines Battalion. Returning to Constanta, the Voroshilov group attack had the composition you named. Parijskaya Komuna and his escorts were at 120-150 NM east of Constanta, waiting the results of Voroshilov group attack, with the purpose of developing an eventual success into a complete destruction of Constanta harbor and Romanian Navy. As things went wrong they never interfered in the battle. Moskva & Khakov crossed very fast through the mine fields (some suspicions reg. Soviet info about Romanian mine fields) and opened fire (350 shells in 10 minutes) on Constanta rail station. Romanian destroyers Marasti and Regina Maria closed in and opened fire on Russian destroyers. The first hit was registered on Kharkov 2 minutes before Tirpitz battery opened fire. When Germans opened fire the Russians ceased fire, turned east and tried to run through the mine fields, under the protection of a smoke screen. After 5 salvos Germans ceased fire but Romanian destroyers continued fire through the smoke screen with some results on Kharkov. Somehow Moskva exploded and sank very fast (some 60 survivors of 311 crew). Two Romanian torpedoboats tried to attack Kharkov but they didn't risk to cross through mine fields. According to other sources they were repulsed by the rest of Voroshilov group .... not likely because Russians tried to close in, to support Kharkov, but Soobrazitelnii detonated a mine with his anti-mine shield that provoked some damages on Voroshilov cruiser. Te entire group retreated east at low speed. Both Romanians and Germans claimed the sunk of Moskva but, after analyses and talks with Russian survivors, they concluded that Moskva hit a mine. After war another theory said that Moskva was sunk, by mistake, by a Russian submarine. Some survivors from Moskva said they saw some torpedo tracks in water, before explosion. Romanian torpedoboats didn't launch any torpedo and submarine Delfinul was 50 NM far away.

Sorry, Riverwolf, my sources is soviet and german original documents, not books - this automatically say that this data is more precise than any book. Attack to Constanta has no connection with attack on Chilia. Only support to naval raid was air raid, but poorly conducted. No BKA was sunk 26.6.41. Sole loss in June - BKA Nr.114, sunk on Danube 65 km 28.6.41. Soviets said, that captured on 26.6.41 in Chilia was 720 mens, 8 guns, 30 MGs, 100 rifles. 200 romanians killed, soviet losses 5 killed, 7 wounded. 3 BKA light damaged. PARIZSKAYA KOMMUNA didn't leave Sevastopol, nor TASHKENT. Main goal of attacking force was destroying not all Constanta (such impossible task!), but only oil storage in port. Destroying of C. and Romanian navy was not planned in this operation. Since VOROSHILOV begin to retreat from 6.17msk, she can't be damaged by mines or other way in this fighting. SOOBRAZITELNIY didn't detonate any mines, she only see some "torpedo trail". Btw, all "torpedoes" and "submarines" was illusions. There was no romanian or russian subs in area. I repeat, CHARKOV received no hits. All romanian "old" torpedoboats (SBORUL-class, NALUCA-class) was former austro-hugarian and not French. You could easily discover this in Mike Whitely capital work about WWII destroyers. NALUCA was sunk in Constanta harbour 20.8.44 by soviet bombers, others scrapped. This ships AFAIK never served on Danube. They escorted convoys near Black Sea west coast and to Krym.

Rogi, the book is based on German, Romanian and Russian archives, is not SF. Damaschin spent his entire life Both in the navy and both authors worked years in connection with military historians and museums from Romania and many other countries. I hope you are not talking about the Soviet archives of the Communist Party. In those archives the Soviet Navy destroyed all the enemies, never lost a ship, never receive a single hit, never did any mistake. I'm talking about recent researches. You are talking only about the battle of Chilia Veche, don't you have any archives info about the battle of Periprava. Why is that? I'll tell you: because Soviet officials used to hide the defeats because was not goo for the moral. They lost 4 armored patrol boats on Periprava and, at least, one of them was recovered and used under Romanian flag. I'll come back soon regarding your confusion on Smeul and Zmeul torpedoboat classes.

Rogi, regarding your confusion between the two torpedo boat classes, Smeul & Zmeul, I'm telling you that my grand grandfather couldn't fight and be decorated in the first world war, serving on a ship who came in Romania after the wwi. I found some data regarding the three torpedo boats who served in RRN in wwi, Smeul, Naluca, Sborul: Were classified High Seas Torpedo Boats and built by "Societe anonyme de Forges et Chantiers de la Mediteranee"("Granville"), Le Havre, in 1887 and 1888. The shipyard built a total of 51 torpedo boats, three for Romania and the rest for French Navy. Were nicknamed "dos de chamaux" (camel back) because of their specific silhouette. The contract was signed between Romanian Minister of Defense and Mr. A.Coville (representing the shipyard). Specifications: Length: 35m Width: 3.35m Depth: 0.90m Weight: 53-56 to Engine: 540HP Speed: 20knts Weapons: 2 x 381 mm TT (4 torpedoes) 2 x 37 mm rapid fire revolver-guns Range: 195-225 NM at top speed 430-590 NM at 12 knts The total cost of the order was 684.000 gold francs. During the tests Naluca and Sborul reached 22 knts and Smeul 26 knts. They served in RRN in wwi, as I said before. Smeul capsized and sank on 15.04.1917, because of rough sea, close to Stari Stambul branch of Danube, now in Ukraine (and not next to Jibrieni as I mentioned earlier). The other two were scrapped after wwi. Their names were taken by three torpedo boats received after wwi, from Austro-Hungary, as war compensations. To avoid confusions, the names were Zmeul, Naluca, Zborul (the Z class). Picture with them as well as specifications could be found very easy on naval forums.

Since i'm deep only in sea fleet history, i don't know Danube fightings in details." A detailed book about the battle of Periprava will soon appear in the US. The soviet plan was to attack in two directions: Chilia-Tulcea and Constanta-Cernavoda in order to slow down the german offensive in center and destroy the oilfields near Ploiesti. The battle of Periprava and the heavy losses during the assault of Constanta have led the Soviets to abandon this plan. "So name them please. The ship wreck was descovered later at Jibrieni; she was repaired and renamed ship No.7 under roumanian flag. At least five ships were lost by the soviets during the battles of Periprava and Chilia Veche (BKA 102, BKA 111, BKA 113, BKA 124, BKA 134). bibliography: Rohwer I., Hummelchen G.-"Chronology of the war at sea 1939-1945" I will post some pictures as soon as possible.

MUGURCUL - please feel free to post pictures but they must be thumbnails like the others in the forum. :)
"You didn't wrote about Periprava-battle much text, too. Propaganda things was present on other side. Soviets says, that Periprava was heavily fortified place with 1000+ men garrison with 3 artillery batteries, and infantry authorities (14 rifle corps) refuse to send reinforcements for taking P. So, attack never happen and only artillery and ships fight with this strongpoint. It is quite possible, that there was some attacks, repulsed by romanians. Faceless "N boats sunk" almost always mean only claims for destroying from defending side, not confirmed by other side. Soviets for example claimed that aircrafts sunk many romanian monitors on Danube, but this was not true." A soviet BKA was seriously damaged during the night of June 25/26, 1941 near Tulcea. If not possible to buy it, at least some info posted here on the subject. As far as I could find info, the soviet armored boat recovered and used by RRN was BKA 134. Regarding the total number and names of Soviet BKAs destroyed by RRN and marines on the Danube, I found different numbers: - 17th Marines Battalion received from Ion Antonescu a Citation for Bravery and the document speaks about 6 BKAs and une barge sunk and 2 monitors damaged during the 30 days of combats in Periprava area. - in other sources I found 4 BKAs and one barge sunk during the Soviet attack on Periprava. In a separate operation, another BKA was sunk at Isaccea, by artillery and mines. On 11th of July were destroyed 2 Soviet armored patrol boats, by artillery fire but the sector is not mentioned (maybe Stipoc area?). That's why I'm waiting more info form the book you mentioned.
