THANK YOU DEAR KEBLIN ! In the last photo is a verry rare visit of marshall ION ANTONESCU (chief of state from the begining of ww2 till 1944) on board of an RRN warship . ANTONESCU enjoyed inspecting ground troups (he served in cavallery in the begining of his millitary carier) !

I found two interesting postcards from the begining of the last century of RRN cruiser ELISABETA .

88mm german flack-gun on gunboat in Constanta-harbour . All these small german boats served for escorts for convoys or for antiaircraft protection . The both missions were full of succes , the RRN and Axis ship-losses counter soviets were very low .

Doru, What was the official basic system of identification for ships of the RRN? By this I mean pennant numbers, and/or names or nameplates permenantly attached to the vessels? Did they have treadplates on the quaterdeck or nameboards on the sides of the vessel? How could one identify the ship at a distance, and when one boarded her? I ask, because it should be clearly evident when boarding a ship, which vessel it is. Is this true for the RRN? Best Regards,

Dear KEBLIN, When two ships are near-board , the identification is a litlle difficult . The RRN destroyers are not so difficult to identify , they were italian built destroyers after british Shakespeare type leader destroyers project a litlle modificated (the fifth turret)and they were only two!!! The names of RRN ships are visible on both sides of the sips and also from the rear . During WW2 some RRN ships were paint in camouflage painting and the identification was made for destroyers after playng cards , so RRN destroyer REGELE FERDINAND had painted on his bow -hearts,REGINA MARIA-spades,MARASESTI-clubs and MARASTI-diamonds . The gunboats-minedredgers were inscriptioned with St, Dm and Gh (STIHI, DUMITRESCU and GHICULESCU) same as torpedoescorts NALUCA and SBORUL (Nl Sb).The Vospers and Gusto torpedoboats had numbers . The submarines were not marked . After 1944 ,as I litlle know ,serving in the soviet navy, destroyers REGINA MARIA and REGELE FERDINAND had the numbers 23 , 24 ,and minelayer AMIRAL MURGESCU PT76 .

Doru, your many posts and photographs of the under-appreciated and historically less known Romanian Royal Navy (at least in my country, and this is not meant to be insulting, it's just the way the history books go) are just really a great piece of work,and what this forum does best, highlight ALL navies and ALL crews who served in times of war and peace. I love your photographs and post cards of these ships in their heyday, and hope you can post more about their actual operations and service in future. With your extensive collection evident on this forum, I see "A History of the Romaninan Royal Navy" in your future, should you decide to do so. You have the basis for a fascinating historical addition to the world's naval history. I know over here in America we know little or nothing of the sea battles and sacrifices of your country in the great wars of the 20th century, and of course a lot of this is due to the Soviet-era "blackout" you suffered through historically. I for one truly enjoy this thread simply because almost everything in it is something I have not seen or read about before, except in the most bare-bones fashion in some of the naval annuals of the period. Thanks for your many posts and your obvious deep knowledge of your subject. It is all very enjoyable stuff and I have learned a lot! Best regards,

Hi Duro.Is 'Delfinul' ex Italian or British? She looks very much like a British H class submarine? Many Regards Steve.

Dear STEVE, DELFINUL was built in Italy , at Fiume (today Rijeka in Croatia) so it is italian not british . The italians copied the design of british Shakespeare leader-destroyers and they built REGELE FERDINAND and REGINA MARIA , so it would't be so spectacular that italians had copy also the design of some british subs .
