Re: DE's being converted to power plants. During the winter of 1929 - 1930, the USS Lexington, CV-2, was used as a temporary electric power plant for the city of Tacoma, Washington, when the local power plant had some major failure. There are photos of the cables running from the ship to the shore at dockside on the Navsource website.
Many years ago there was an article on this instance in the old "Sea Classics" magazine if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, what I don't remember correctly is what I did with the magazine. Bill
Ahh! Rivet-counters! Sorry, "battleships". Enjoy the image, if not the caption. Regards, Steve G.
Steve--the photo was probably taken in the period 1921-24, when USS McCormick was serving in European waters (she served to the Asiatic Fleet 1924-32, and then was based at San Diego until the war). The British battleship on the left is one of the ORION Class, I suspect HMS THUNDERER, (since the others were serving in the Atlantic fleet until paying off in 1921-22); Thunderer served as a cadet training ship until the mid-20's. The French ship on the left by the looks of her is a BRETAGNE Class, probably BRETAGNE herself, since LORRAINE and PROVENCE were in reserve in the early 20s. (Quite a lot can be deduced from counting rivets :D)

As for rivet counting, you should hear me when I see shots of 'photographers at work'. Regards, Steve G.
