High John , Complicated , well it depends on what you want from your model and how that can be best achieved . SLA Batteries are very useful and relatively easy to use ...but at a cost Lipo batteries are more complex , but if you have a little knowledge [ very little in my case] and good information they can be a very real asset . !/ a considerable weight saving 2/ a fraction of the physical size 3/ much less time to recharge Whilst there are more benefits they are easier to shoe horn into small models . and easier to place when it comes to building into the model . On this model I have two Lipo 11.1 volt batteries wired in parallel which are half the weight and take half the space . If you invest in a decent charger which will do all three types of batteries currently used in models it comes with a balancing mode which when used will read the battery cells and its capacity and then alter the charge to each cell to "Balance "the over all output of the charged battery . There are better people on this Forum to explain how they work and the Techno capabilities of them .....so I will leave it to them to do a more capable job .

Well I did the obligatory basin tests today in the back garden , which proved conclusively that its a case of back to the drawing board ...again .:( The hull has an unhealthy desire to display her keel ...inspite of the many happy hours of pleasure she gave on the lake . Just proves how critical the C of G is to the vessel , and the effect that the removal / addition of bulkheads , equipment can be . Curiously enough it is the addition of the superstructure to the decking which makes it unstable . So now having done all the hard work I will need to extend the base line beneath the keel by adding some lead bar I have .....which if you long term readers of this Forum recall I had to do to the model of HMS Trougbridge ......and as you will recall adds even more weight but cannot be avoided :(

Ivor: Keep the faith-it always comes down to trial and error. Regards, Brian

Thanks Brian for your interest and comments . Dry docked her again and removed the "Foggy" unit from midship and fitted a 1Kg lead weight to the underside of the hull , by drilling through the Hull and lead block and bolting it into position bedded on a layer of epoxy resin and after cutting off the waste inside coated the inside of the bolts as well to ensure no seepage of water . Tested it again and nearly right [ but as a consequence she now sits lower in the water ] so will see what I can do to trim the top weight down a tad .

Well last weekend was a mixed bag As you can see she sits well in the water now , but had a problem with the ESC so no shake down trials ......never mind try again next week end :o

You may recall I spoke about Lipo batteries a while back and their inclination to catch fire if not charged correctly or drained to low ..... Had an incident last weekend which gave us all a hard lesson to observe . I fellow member who has helped me with all sorts of issues has a beautiful German torpedo boat model which he brought down to the lake and took was getting it ready to go out when he noticed smoke coming out which it was not designed to have ;) So he quickly took the model apart only to see the battery burst in to flames 1/ Charred underside of Deck 2/ Charred battery bay 3/ buggered battery ....11.3 v Lipo

Good Heavens, do the manufacturers of Lipo batteries know of that tendency to burst into flame  It would seem a given that a moderate proportion of hobbyist users would either mischarge or discharge them to too low a level. I don't suppose that there is a warning line on each battery that would indicate either danger in advance  Missy
Good Heavens, do the manufacturers of Lipo batteries know of that tendency to burst into flame  Missy
Missy, not an unusual occurrence with modern hi-tech batteries. The US FAA grounded all Boeing 787 Dreamliners from Jan to April 2013 because on board batteries had overheated and caught fire on a couple of planes. Various laptops makes have also had burning battery problems. John

Well despite the weather here are todays shots of the refurbed Manxman going through her paces.... She handled really well if a little twitchy at high speed [ shudder to think what state the mess room was in after these turns today . The motors being slightly bigger responded to the Action ESC very well and the rudder....... on turns...... speeds up one prop and reverses the other which along with the rudder action .....can almost turn her on the side if not careful . But a wet windy day did nothing for the "foggy' smoke generator which gives no sign of smoke although it was going full pelt .......Yes SANDY I know a good Stoker would find this a walk in the park ..........but having spent all this time and money fitting it in it would have been nice to see it coming out Lesson to be learned here .......is it worth spending the extra to have it linked to the ESC .....or would it be better going hell for leather all the time ........as when you slow down revs you get very little smoke Sorry for the quality of the pictures , I have tried to lighten them up without losing the detail .......but it was a crappy day here

Looks pretty good to me Ivor ...... and don't worry too much over the smoke thing ............ it was always the Klankie's way of winding up the Yeoman on the Flagdeck :(. Smoke generators really come into their own with a gentle breeze and today's weather across the water, if it is anything like down here, emulates a force 10 gale. Seriously, a good show and she looks the Dog's wotsits .......... now for the tug and don't let Troubridge get lonely. Dave H p.s Having refurbed three boats ready for the season AND PAINTED THE FENCE am now back working on the RY

Yes Dave ...Some of us also tend to maintain our border containment devices [ fences ] in much the same way as our models ;) I'm sure our dear Sandy has done all his now and will be sending us some Pictures to prove it :p Thank for the comments Dave . Now mate you know Shorham Girls ......any advice you can offer me about my Fleet , as she has told me I'm working on my last Model [H.M.Tug] as my dockyard is full to bursting now :(........and she wants the Dining room back to show off her dads China collection :(.....all self if you ask me .

Ivor, looks as if a den/summerhouse in the back garden is called for :D. MANXMAN does look a treat, especially conducting that sharp turn. Left hand down a bit was it? In the light of John's enlightenment about sudden fires, ought you have a yeoman plus fire extinguisher on duty during evolutions? Missy

However , for the record , I have twelve as she puts it cluttering up the hacienda but I use selective hearing for all that incoming. One for Missie -- us Kommunikating elite don't hold Fire Extinguishers for Klankies - we leave that to the Upperdeck Ringbolt Jockeys. Dave H

Thank you all for your kindness and understanding during this refurb ....it has been both my inspiration , and motivation whilst covering the hurdles encountered .....:o I will keep you updated as and when anything changes or the opportunity presents itself ............you have been a loyal bunch and I extend my gratitude to you all for your help with this refit . In some ways it has taught me a lot ,....in others revisited things I should have known about , but the grey cells had temporarily abandoned me .....none the less an interesting and instructional refit ....:o

As you may have seen elsewhere , another problem has emerged necessitating an engine refit . Whilst checking out the model I noted that the Starboard motor was getting very hot and after further examination I have decided to re engine the model . The existing motors were 385 in size and they will be....... subject to ESC compatibility..... be replaced by two 555 motors . This is a shame after so much work was carried out to the decks but needs must and they have been removed , after a lot of hard work and fiddly alteration . The existing ESC can handle the motor size according to the blurb issued by the makers [ Action...now Component-shop.] but a lot of entrails will need rerouting to enable me to remove / re align props / couplings / engine mounts and then reinstate with no bits left over . The new motors are apparently less economical on power..... but thats the price you pay . The old 385 motors drew .4A each and rev at 9280 rpm and the new motors draw 1.49A each and rev at 5300 so I'm hoping for minimal trade off :( The old motors were housed in an oak mount with holes bored into which the motor fitted snugly , but the new ones require a metal mtg so I have had to cut out the existing wooden mtg from an opening 30mm wide into which a flexidrive drill head was lowered and a fine tooth Dremel diamond cutter was lowered and managed to chop it out successfully So I now have to fit a custom made base to the contoured hull and the two mtgs screwed in place on top to take these new motors This should prove challenging ......ill keep you posted ......

I always stop in here on my way to post the latest from my (very) static USS Tang to see what the "big boys" are doing with their large and vary mobile vessels. Beautiful ships even if they didn't sail the raging main. Always fun to see them going through their paces "at sea"!

The Old charred motors are out and the new ones refitted after removal of the shafts and a light coat of silicon grease and refitting , checking the universal couplings and refitting . New motors have new suppressors fitted and motors run to make sure its all ok , and a new engine out plate fitted and resin coated to ensure they don't loosen after basin trials  All the entrials will now need to be shoe horned back in .......one of the down sides of fitting sound modules , amplifiers, speakers, switch gear, and all the paraphernalia that goes with it .......case of large arthritic hands V slender hull lines and bulkheads and construction to deter water ingress .........and hope you win ;) All this to add a sense of realism and satisfy the lakeside pundits that know better and are only to willing to tell you where you went wrong and how they would have done it .......like I would listen any way  Getting nearer but awaiting the return of my TX / RX to test what has been fitted so far , before I proceed ...

Nice work!! Would it be possible to do a video, with sound, of her and post a link? Sure would like to "sea" and hear her!! :D Maybe one of these days my tiny RN needs one of these interesting minelayers, too? Never have built one.... DFO

I Wish ......this is Ivor your talking to here .......I have the kit but not the brains Dennis ......ill see if i can coax one of the members to show me how to do that .. I'm sure its possible ....but having never done it ......or been asked to ...... Its something I have not pursued .....then I would need some one like Jim our trusty moderator to talk me through uploading it on the Forum I have got as far as possible today with the refit but as I said awaiting the TX before I complete in case it all has to come out again :( The manufactures claim to have it on soak test [ I have nearly done that myself at the lakeside but managed to catch it just in time ] so will need to be patient ....not my strongest suit :o They are certainly a fascinating vessel , and there is a very good book on both their individual actions during the last WW and how they developed as a concept into a ship that was to fulfil so many tasks which attracted much interest from the enemy ..... the best one was by Arther Nicolson called VERY SPECIAL SHIPS by Seaforth publishing

Ok I seem to have repaired / replaced / refurbished the defects and rewired the whole vessel and re run the signal cable work . The ESC has been reprogrammed and the TX has now been returned from the manufacturers repaired and serviced .;) the RX were duff and in need of replacement so there on order as the one that was fitted is now obsolete:mad: I won't be able to take her down for re balancing.... as tomorrow I will be trimming out the TUG , and the following week I am at my mothers funeral ....so the next weekend I will take her down for a" Basin trials " ESC..Electric Speed Controller TX... Transmitter RX... Receiver I touched up the paintwork as after so many years she was a tad scuffed and applied a coat of satin lacquer to help keep her looking respectable

The Replacement Receiver has been delivered from the far side of the world and arrived recently . So like Troubridge the new AR6200 will be installed , and the system checked and bind it to the transmitter and ready for a Basin trial down at the lakeside soon Hopefully the old girl will be like new again in fresh livery , new motors and new Receiver .......such are the joys of modellers .

Awe!, the receiver! ........What a let down, there was me looking forward to a WIP of Manxman morphing into at least a QE or POW, although come to think of it maybe we've had enough QE for a while. You could always make a cunning plan to sew a minefield, just enough to disable the odd model or three, so you could exercise you salvage rights with the Tug. Ah well back to reality, better get painting again, went out and bought a new 'electric dobhi bucket' AND Galley Stove! This morning Can't complain the old ones were almost 30 year old! Jim

Electric dobhi bucket and galley stove .......Hmmmm new one on me Jim Thanks for looking in though :D

Jim
although said in jest Jim [ I Think] one modeller reputedly fitted a rail deck and left the stern doors open.... to drop model mines  although that could be done what would you use to detonate the mines ....lithium batteries perhaps

Beats Play Station any day. Squibs used to work under water as well, as long as you waited for it to 'Fizz' before dunking it. Jim

O K ...... Fess up ....... who has hijacked all Don's USS Tang and subsequent posts thereto. Dave H

Ah ....the impetuousness of youth eh Jim .......takes me back to when I was at school in Shepherds Bush and used to put pennies on the railway lines to be flattened and then sell in the playground ..........very naughty and stupid ....but at that time and playing in Bomb craters it was considered quite tame .....untill dad found out then I had trouble sitting for a while ..... Still all six of us have made old age even after living on dripping sandwiches , and marge and sugar sandwiches with a broken biscuit in our lunch box at school As for Manxman she will be back in her element soon and I'm trying to find a loop hole in the Apple system which seems determined to stop me putting photos on the threads
O K ...... Fess up ....... who has hijacked all Don's USS Tang and subsequent posts thereto. Dave H
Not Guilty your honour , but glad I read todays posts before it happened  Surely this falls into the realms of Comms ....not us stoker lads :p
Not Guilty your honour , but glad I read todays posts before it happened  Surely this falls into the realms of Comms ....not us stoker lads :p
Sorry Ivor but this is a Crystal Ball problem ....try a Glassblower ;);) Perhaps Tang is on BlackOps

ping....ping...ping...pinga!.

Took Manxman down to the lake to check out the engine refurb and whilst she ran well she seemed to have a minor problem with rudder response so back to the test bench Im afraid and might just be a bit of fine tuning required :(

Good luck with that Ivor, I know you can sort it out. Jim

Hopefully Jim ....Cant afford another claim just yet eh:(
