I have just changed over to Firefox and it seems to have sorted all the problems I previously had not being able to access New Posts, etc on both IE8 and IE9.

If you haven't switched to another browser and are still using IE8 or IE9, there is another suggestion I have that may solve the problem of there being no 'New Posts' to view. When browsing our site, use the Compatability Button. This should revert some settings to previous versions and allow the New Posts section to work. Unfortunately I can't confirm this as my home broadband has been down for over a week now (waiting for a new router) and I can't check here at work. I've attached a screenshot showing where to find the compatability button. It appears as a split or broken page icon at the right hand end of the address bar.

Some of the entries in today's "World Naval Ships Timeline, 9th September; 83 entries" seem to be duplicated. For example; H.M.S. G9 (three times) and H.M.S. Dragon (twice). Are these correct, or are they just duplications? Also, it says G9 was sunk in error by H.M.S. Pasley; but then H.M.S. Petard in the heading brief! Which is correct, please?

Hi Kc Already tried that but the oversized ad blocks are still throwing the alignment out. Mitch Hinde
Already tried that but the oversized ad blocks are still throwing the alignment out.
Is that better? Changed the code slightly.

I had same problem, page loading out of alignment and had to use scroller bar to realign, but now cured;) Jim

Today's World Naval Ships Timeline error: H.M.S. Dreadnought laid down 10th September 1870; in 2 different builders yards!
Today's World Naval Ships Timeline error: H.M.S. Dreadnought laid down 10th September 1870; in 2 different builders yards!
This has now been fixed

Hi All Yippee, all is now cured, well done whoever is responsible, thankyou. Mitch Hinde

Hello. Been having a problem with the site server not being addressed. This has happened on several occaisions with the search engine, saying timed out. This is a common problem when a site has a high user demand - namely the server is not able to do all the work needed in a specific time. The family research engines of Ancestry are at times bad for this. Too many demands on the resources available. If the popularity of the site increase substancialy an increase of server capability may be needed. Love the site though.:) Chris

I won't go into stats on the server load and capacity, but it is amply sufficient for our current needs. As harry pointed out, a separate issue has been affecting the server for the last 30 or so hours.

I tried to search the "Special Warship Pictures" thread for Effingham, using the "Search this thread" facility. But the search didn't restrict itself just to this thread, instead it performed a forums-wide search and gave matches from other threads. Has anyone else noticed this, and is it a general problem?

Hi Bill, I tried the same search and got the following results http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/search.php?searchid=1432158 I did that by going to the Special Warships thread and clicking on the Search this Thread selection (next to the star rating), rather than the Search Forums selection, which would show up all posts for Effingham. Not sure which method you used. Jim

Jim, I did exactly that and got this: http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/search.php?searchid=1432134 It does the same with this thread!

Jim I have solved the mystery. We are both correct. It depends on how you get into the thread! If you select the thread from its title, then you get your results. But if you select it from the "latest post", you get my incorrect results. Maybe its something kc could look at.

Hi Bill and thanks for the reply. It appears that if you select New Posts and then do a search from the list of New Posts displayed, the search defaults to the whole Forum and not just those in the New Posts. Jim
Yes it has always done this. As Bill quite rightly pointed out the only way to get the right search result is to enter the thread from the title itself.
While I'm in a moaning mood there is another searching anomaly I have come across. Supposing I have a photo of HMS Invincible I want to post, but don't want to duplicate an existing one. Following one of Clive's suggestions about searching, I entered "HMS Invincible" and searched by thread title - all ok as only threads with both "HMS" and "Invincible" in their title were displayed - fine. :) Then I did the same search on all posts and got 500 matches - I suspect that this is a forum limit and there were really many more. If thread titles are displayed instead of posts, then 311 threads are shown. Looking at the posts it was obvious that only "Invincible" had been searched for and the "HMS" ignored. :( Who is going to look through 311 threads or 500 posts just to see if a photo has been posted before? This is where my suggestion of the ability to search attachment titles would pay dividends. Perhaps the limitations of both these searching quirks could be highlighted somewhere (perhaps in "Terry's Forum Notes") so that the incidences of posting duplicate pictures may be reduced.

I don't know if this would help, Bill If you look at where the thread title is listed in the index, there's a paperclip icon just to the right. If you click on that it brings up a list, by attachment name, of all those in the thread. You can't tell which post they are from but you can open them. An imperfect solution but the best I could find having the same problem as you've described. Missy

I don't know if anyone's interested in this but I set up a brand new computer yesterday; nothing fancy, using Windows 7, Internet Explorer. The New Posts feature on this forum never worked on my previous computer and today it doesn't work on the new one either. No problems with any of the other forums I frequent. Bart

Bart
Hi Bart, Read back my friend --- it would appear that IE8 and IE9 do not like our site. Many of us seems to have problems with it and have found several ways to correct it by shifting to Google [works in my case but some others have found a problem with it] or Firefox [which many recommend]. Dave H

Changing to Firefox is by far the best and easiest option IMHO.

Thanks, chaps.

When I log in the forum now tells me that there are no matches for ‘New Post’ or ‘Todays Post’, which is a bit frustrating. Not having changed my computer, browser, settings or IE I find it a bit of a mystery. Possibly one of the Windows updates has changed the settings and in which case I would expect some other members of the forum to experience similar problems. Alternatively I must have inadvertently infringed one of the forum rules. I will see if the problem persists.

All I can do is to repeat my previous advice. I too suffered with the sudden loss of ‘New Post’ as well as ‘Todays Post’. I was using Windows Vista with IE. I made the easy 2 minute change from Explorer to Firefox and all my problems were a thing of the past. I configured it so that I had both Firefox and Explorer on my desk-top. When I discovered that Firefox sorted out my forum problems I intended to use it just for that and use Explorer for all other things. However I found there was very little difference between the two browsers anyway and that if anything I preferred Firefox which I now use for everything. If you haven't tried Firefox then I urge you to do so immediately! :)

I have been blighted with the same problem (except clunker of android phone ). As a bit of an amateur with this IT stuff, can I ask if installing Firefox is memory heavy? I'm fairly sure my laptop could cope but Hubbie got me a little netbook especially for my running around to the National Archives etc. That plus flash drive(s) helps (or will when I next get time to go) with collecting data for my researches/learning how to research.:) However , of course, it's rather small in size and memory so I not sure if it can support both Firefox and Windows 7 IE. Missy

There seems to be absolutely no problem with the forum when I log in from the office (Windows 7, IE) and it has only just started at home (W 7, IE). Computers keep life interesting.

Missy
Hi Missy sorry for the delay in replying but I have only just seen your post. Firefox is definitely not memory heavy. Regarding your little netbook that might be different - however it is not a case of replacing Windows with Firefox but using Firefox rather than Explorer. They are your browsers, Windows is your operating system. You would keep Windows regardless of which browser you use. After one downloads Firefox you will get their icon on your desktop which allows a choice of which one to use although it would be quite easy to just use Firefox and uninstall Explorer completely. I find there is very little difference between them anyway - other than Firefox allows me to continue to see new posts/todays posts and the other things that seemed to be lost using more recent versions of Explorer. :)

Interesting thread Terry. It seems we have a few pesky varmints in the system from time to time. I ditched IE for Firefox on the advice of my provider and it certainly cured many of the problems I had been experiencing. However, regarding the Forum, I still find that having originated a post and submitted it they disappear for some time or until someone posts on that particular thread. My way of resurrecting them fast is to go to "Quick Links" and click on "Todays Posts". Doesn't seem to matter which version you use with the browser cos' I operate three computers on XP , Vista and Windows 7 respectively. Dave H

Dave I have a feeling that the forum software only shows posts that someone else has posted. As you said, to see your post, you need to go to "Todays Posts"

With you on that Dave. Example - after reading your reply to my post and closing your post it disappears from the menu until the next entry on that thread and once again the only way to retrieve it is to as you say and as I did go into "Quick Links - Todays Posts". Frustrating - yes , but what the heck. Life goes on regardless. Dave H
I have a feeling that the forum software only shows posts that someone else has posted. As you said, to see your post, you need to go to "Todays Posts"
That seems to be correct Dave. "New Posts" are posts that are new to the user. If you posted, then that post is not new to you - you have seen it; therefore it will not show up under "New Posts" until someone else posts on the same thread, because that post is new to you. Only "Today's Posts" shows all new posts. I think that makes sense?

Clear as crystal Bill ---- just proving too much Sangria and Vino Tinto blurs the edges. Dave H

Not of earth-shattering importance, but have noticed that the little green "Reputation" boxes are not appearing on anyone's posts ... ? A system problem ... or have I done something stupid?
Not of earth-shattering importance, but have noticed that the little green "Reputation" boxes are not appearing on anyone's posts ... ?
Not only that, but if you look under your "User CP" all the reputations (or whatever they are called) have disappeared!!!
