Weren't the pom pom and the 0.5 quad aa gun enlargements of the vickers 303 machine gun, itself a development of the maxim gun. This seems a cheap and inefficient short cut to me.

Can you elaborate on the information you have about the cheap and inefficient choice which was made to enable this direction of choice?

I think the sten gun was designed around an italian9mm pistol round millions of which were captured in North Africa. .[/QUOTE] The sten was developed as a quick and cheap replacement for weapons lost at Dunkirk which was several months before we sorted out the Italians AND we already had a 9mm weapon in the Lanchester which was made for the RAF and Navy though most of the first production run went the the Navy. Mechanically the sten was about the same as the Lanchester which was in service before we captured the Italian ammo Geoff
