Well done Dave Mik
Moronic penny-pinching threatens symbol of British naval heritage, HMS Victory News that the MoD is considering forcing the Royal Navy to disown HMS Victory and then palm her off to a private company or charity to save tiny amounts of money reveals the rotten core of this government. Admiral Nelson achieved success that was the foundation stone for British sea power that dominated the globe for 150 years. Flogging off Nelson's flagship cannot simply be seen as a rational cost-saving measure but must be interpreted as a calculated and deliberate insult to the Royal Navy. This is an affront to our national heritage and typical of this moribund government and politically correct civil service, petty-minded, short-sighted and idiotic. This idea could almost be seen as something more sinister; is there an element in government with deliberate plan to discredit and dismantle the RN completely? From a UK website....DFO
I have long held the view that there is indeed a secret plan to destroy the Royal Navy, along with the Army and Royal Air Force, in favour of a Euro-Kreigsmarine, Euro-Wehrmacht & Euro-Luftwaffe.

I think that the information contained in the following post on another thread is more up to date:- http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10019618&postcount=66 Little h

I have just found out about Victory, can someone tell me bout her?

I served on Victory as one of the last RN guides at the beginning of the 90's. The Naval Heritage people who "looked after" the Victory, Mary Rose and Warrior, charged a lot of money to have tours of these ships. We worked out that over an average year the Victory alone brought in over £1.5m. Out of, that around £200,000 went back to the MOD for ship upkeep. Those figures are, as best as I can remember, correct. If they are out it is not by much One strange thing was that we were could have, as Victory Ships Company, free tours of the Mary Rose but had to pay to go around the Warrior.

Interesting: (From navaltoday.com) HMS Victory: Preserving the world’s oldest commissioned warship "As part of what contractor BAE Systems described as the most extensive restoration project the 252-year-old HMS Victory underwent following her repair after the Battle of Trafalgar, the world’s oldest commissioned warship will receive a new structural support system for the ship. Specialist engineers from BAE Systems are collaborating with the National Museum of the Royal Navy on the unique project to help preserve HMS Victory. Since HMS Victory first docked in Portsmouth Naval Base, she has been supported on 22 steel cradles and a concrete plinth. In order to preserve HMS Victory’s wooden hull, the existing cradles, which were installed in 1925, will be replaced with 134 precisely positioned props. The props will evenly distribute the ship’s load to recreate the natural stresses experienced on the hull when the ship was supported by water." Complete article here: http://navaltoday.com/2017/08/21/hms-victory-preserving-the-worlds-oldest-commissioned-warship/
I still remember the furor caused when the Pompey News reported as an April Fool prank that HMS Victory was being prepared to return to sea to participate in the 1977 Queen's Silver Jubilee Review. The paper was inundated with requests from people who desperately wanted to be on board for her sailing, including many schoolchildren who ended up being bitterly disappointed. It was only then pointed out that her masts were cemented into the bottom of the dry dock because her structure had become too fragile to support them. Best wishes, Rob www.mcdoa.org.uk
Can anyone confirm if the masts are cemented to the bottom of the dock? Whilst on base last year I noted Victory's Top masts had been removed and a colleague advised they would not be refitted for a number of years because the weight was causing causing a problem with the hull which needed strengthening before they could be refitted??
