USS Olympia..Regards Brian..

Brian, nice photo. Looks like the Olympia is being moved up into Philadelphia waterfront possibly in the mid 1950's. ('56 or '57?) Note the Ben Franklin Bridge in the background, also the men on the bow and how they are dressed, and the numeral "40" on the bow. That type of numeral on the bow was typical of US Navy ships after 1948 or so. The "40" comes from the designation "IX40" which she was given in 1931 as an auxiliary. Keep digging up those great photos Brian they add a great deal to this site and I get a kick out of checking out the site each day to see what you have posted. Thanks from all of us. cadillac811

USS Los Angeles c1952..Regards Brian

A grotty but interesting image of Los Angeles with missiles at the stern.

Andy: The missiles appear to be Regulus surface to surface missiles from the 1950s. They were intended to be equipped with nuclear warheads as I recall. Brian

Very clear and crisp shot John thanks ...Regards Brian..

And as a bonus it includes DDG-31 Decatur (ex-DD-936) in the background. Originally an "all-gun" destroyer of the Forrest Sherman class (3 x Mk 42 fully-automatic single 5"/54 mounts + 2 x Mk 33 twin 3"/50 mounts), in the mid-1960s she traded all the 3" guns and the two aft 5" guns for an octuple ASROC launcher, a single Mk 13 Tartar (later Standard/MR) SAM launcher, and a large aft deckhouse containing all the electronics and radar for the Mk 13 system.

Brian: Any idea who the old Bureau 4-stacker in the foreground in #78 is ? It would have to be one of the Bainbridge-class [DD 01-05 or 10-13], I think, based on funnel configuration. Bill

Bill, as I recall the caption said she was a Bainbridge Class but did not give an ID...Regards Brian..

Bill
I was wondering as well; based on details (gun tubs abreast fore-funnel, lack of turtle-back, I reckon she is either Dale (DD4), Decatur (DD5), Paul Jones (DD10), Perry (DD11) or Preble (DD13); couldn't narrow it down further. It is a very good photo of whatever ship it is -- better than just about any I could find.

I'm thinking this is at Mare Island from the lay of the land. Paul Jones, Perry & Preble all operated in and out of there during that time. Best I can do for now but it is an intriguing picture. Bill
Bill--I agree we can make that deduction if we knew for certain the picture was taken in 1905. But it could be earlier: Dale, Decatur and Chicago were all at the Oyster Bay review in August 1903, for example. Perhaps I'm imagining it, but the warehouse in the left background seems to say "Portland" (though who knows whether its Portland OR or Portland ME...)

All we know as to date is that it was washing day from the "blues" on the fo'rd rigging. Bill
Could be and without a rough date, we are at loose ends. All we know as to date is that it was washing day from the "blues" on the fo'rd rigging. Bill
I think #78 must be taken on the Willamette River in Portland OR; the romanesque clock tower of Union Station (built 1896) is on the right; Arlington Heights in the background. Chicago served in the Atlantic or European waters exclusively until the start of 1905, when she became flagship of the Pacific Squadron; Dale and Decatur had already gone to the Philippines by then. Chicago remained in the Pacific until 1908, when she returned to the east coast; she does not seem yo have gone further west than Hawaii in that time. Thus the destroyer is down to three possibles: Paul Jones (DD10), Perry(DD11) or Preble (DD13). All three served in the Pacific fleet 1905-08, and all three seem to have been built to the same design by Union Iron Works in San Francisco.
