Thanks for uploading the Chichester photos, Richard. They bring back happy memories. My elder Brother who passed away many years ago served on her 1958 commission. I was a schoolboy then and visited the ship with my Mum at Chatham when Chichester returned from abroad. I've downloaded the two photos of her at that period if that's OK. Peter

What are you doing in Director Cylla, you were FC2 like me - strictly in TS - my job during AA Shoots was to be up on GDP with Gunnery Officer, spotting TTB's!

Hi there from new member. I am researching the last days of the Frigate HMS Chichester.is there anyone out there who can give me any info? I believe it was taken out of service in 1979. Regards to all . jack

John - she became Hong Kong Guardship in 1971.....and was sent for scrap in 1981. For what it's worth, I served in her 1967-68 when she was Londonderry Squadron.

Hi John , I have done a search on my discs and certain web sites , come up a blank ... it was at Queensbury where she was at the breaker's.

Just looking through some photographs of Chichester and I notice that on some she has a "wall" around the Bofors. It wasn't in place when I was on her 69 - 71, does anyone know when and why it was removed please. In post #10 I recognise a few of the lads in the photos, the one name that sticks in my memory is, second from the right, for obvious reason, LMEM Stokes.

I can't find any sign of a class association for type 41/61's. Do we know if one exists? A few years ago 2 guys, Peter Rudwick and Mick Withington, tried to start a Chichester one but sadly that faded away.

Jim-W...........Sadly no association exists as far as I know. Strange (or is it?) how some ships have associations, whilst others do not. Of my 5 major drafts, AJAX, CEYLON and SURPRISE have associations, CHICHESTER and KEPPEL do not.

Hi Jim . Yep , just like"Scurs " says , there is not a thread any where , about H.M.S Chichester. I am on FACEBOOK , due to a situation that is about H.M.S Scylla . And I opened a up a page or two , And mentioned Chichester on there .But you will not find me under CYLLA ;) not many old farts about like us around , mainly the last commis ships company .younger lads. Being a "MESS DECK DODGER " I keep a low profile .:D

Only Andromeda has it's own association, Dev is represented on facebook in a County Class Destroyers group. When I get a bit more free time I may think about starting a page for the Cathedrals and Cats. Jim

Hi Gents, I got a copy of Patrick Boniface's book Cats and Cathedrals for Christmas, in it he states that Chichester arrived at the Port of Masirch whilst on route from Mombasa to Bahrain, on 10th January 1970. I can't remember it or find any trace of Masirch in my atlas or on the net, help please. Also I've now started a Facebbok page for Cats and Cathedral, I'm the only one on it at the moment but welcome all ex 41/61 crew members or family of those that served. Stopped there once on a 'sweeper to refuel, we anchored off and they came out on a motorised barge to top us up with diesel. John

Now that I've been through the chapters for Chichester, Lynx and Lincoln I can understand why the publishers didn't get back to me. The book is full and I do mean full of errors. Nearly all the places named on one page are spelt incorrectly. I still find it a useful book for kick-starting the old grey matter, however it will leave some people wondering how a ship can get from California to West Africa in 3 days.

It's been a long time, I did 2 commissions, one FE and roving and refit/conversion and taking Chi to Hong Kong as Guard in 1973. wondered if there is any out there still looking for old shipmates

Right ship...........different period! I was in "CHI" 1967-68 (Londonderry Squadron) and "Cylla" on this site was in her 1965-66 (FES), I think. :)

A different time indeed, She was much changed after the conversion, radars removed, oerlikans installed and set up as patrol and weather ship Hong Kong based.

Excuse my ignorance but what was the purpose of being a "Weather Ship"?

Dunno about "Typhoon Chaser", but recall we (AJAX) got "chased" out of Hong Kong by one.............yes, I will agree, "interesting" it was! :rolleyes: I joined CHI just after you left her Jim, but remember her out FES when I was in AJAX a year previous. :)

Hiya Scurs .. you must have nicked my hammock space .... or had she gone to "bunks" .... Both of us being A/B FC2 ratings ....but me being a sprog on board at first It went like this .... Looking over some old doc,s .. i came across these dates Joined Chichester ......3.7.66 ... in the far flung ..... Recived my "seaman gunner star "..21.2.67 ....... . Passed... Able/seaman.................... 28.2 67 On the 19.4. 67 ... recommended for FC2 ... FC2 in March 1968 passed as .. And i stayed like that till 1975 .[went out side]. two badge man / marksman.. Really all the time were happy days ...except when doing ANY "gangway duties " ...they really hurt bad ...

I was a Stoker on her from late 69 to late 71. Great ship and crew, loved every second.

Hi Jim, Joined CHI, September 1967 at Pompey. As you rightly say, I, like you, was FC2 and a two badged AB. As I recall the forrard Seaman's Mess had 4 bunks, which were claimed by the 4 senior ratings in mess.........one of which was yours truly. However, the 5th senior AB dipped in, because I opted to sleep in Routine Office on a camp bed, (The only person onboard under the rank of Officer, with his own lockable "cabin" :D), perks of GOW! :D
