| HMS Howe, was built by Fairfield and launched on the 9th of April 1940 the last of her class. she served in the Home fleet in 1942 - 43 and in Force H, 1943, on duty off Sicily and in Italian waters and went into refit from October 1943, to June 1944, HMS Howe then was transferred to the British Pacific Fleet and was deployed of Japan. used as a training ship in 1946 she was Scrapped at Inverkeithing 4th June 1958. |
Information received from Peter Hulme: HMS Howe became Flagship to the Reserve Fleet during 1949/50. She also had a civilian telephone exchange in addition to her service equipment which I used to maintain. She was manned by a skeleton crew plus the Admirals Reserve fleet staff. |
A story from Ron Poole: Ron served on HMS Howe as a Radar Operator during the Pacific Campaign and also spent time in Durban during a refit. He remembers a Kamikazi plane bouncing off the deck and ending up in the sea. Also a time when a sailor went overboard whilst going through the roaring forties and Captain McCall refusing to actually stop the ship, which was against regulations, to rescue the chap but steering the ship past slowly, so that he could be brought back aboard. Ron's son Andy has a copy of the ship's journal for the PAcific Campaign. |
