HMS Triumph - World Naval Ships Directory

HMS Triumph

Name : HMS Triumph
Laid Down : 27th January 1943
Launched : 2nd October 1944
Completed : 6th May 1946
Type : Light Fleet Aircraft Carrier
Class : Colossus
Builder : Hawthorn Leslie
Country : UK
Pennants : 16, R16, A108
Fate : Scrapped 1981

Commissioned into the Royal Navy on 6th May 1946 and in 1950 saw service in the Korean War. She then acted as a Cadet training ship and was used for trials on the first angled flight deck. In 1956 she commenced a refit to convert her to a Heavy Repair Ship and completed the conversion in 1965, after which she wore the Pennant Number A108 and was based mainly at Singapore. She was withdrawn from Service in 1975 and held in reserve at Chatham until disposal in 1981.

[Information sent in by 'Stuart'] HMS Triumph (Colussus Class) was indeed converted into a Fleet Heavy Repair Ship in 1964. She spent much of her time in that role moored on the North Wall in Chatham Dockyard's No. 3 Basin. She was sold to a spanish ship breakers and left Chatham shortly before the dockyard closed in 1984. HMS Bulwark spent her final days in Portsmouth harbour. I remember she was moored astern of HMS Tiger in 1982. I believe she was sold for scrap in 1983. HMS Hermes was coverted to an Anti-submarine Carrier and fitted with a 'Ski-Jump' for Sea Harriers. She commissioned in that role, I think in 1979. She was de-commissioned once the current Ark Royal was completed and was sold to India in 1986 or 1987. I believe she still serves in the Indian Navy, I think under the name 'Vikrant'.
