HMS Abingdon Laid Down : 30th November 1917 Launched : 11th June 1918 Completed : 6th November 1918 Type : Minesweeper Class : Hunt Builder : Ailsa Country : UK Pennants : J23 Fate : Beached after air attack, 5th April 1942. Broken up 1950. |
Initially she served with the Aegean Squadron. From 1919-1935 she was held in reserve at Malta, then joined the 2nd Minesweeping Flotilla in Malta and Hong Kong. Following a successful Warship Week National Savings campaign in February 1942 she was adopted by Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.[3] Returning to Malta at the start of World War II, Abingdon was damaged by a mine in 1941. She was bombed and severely damaged by Italian aircraft 5 April 1942 at Kalkara Creek, Malta and was beached with a broken back at Bighi. She was broken up there in 1950. |

In reserve 12th January 1938 - Sailed Singapore for Malacca 2nd September 1939 - 2nd Minesweeping Flotilla, China Station April 1940 - Transferred to the Mediterranean 5th April 1942 - Beached at Malta after taking heavy bomb damage from Italian aircraft 5th April 1942 - Attacked while waiting to enter Kalkara Creek Dock for repairs and beached April 1947 - Sold April 1950 - Scrapped |
