Tom Williams joined 611 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force, early in 1939, rejoining after completing his training in April 1940. He served with 611 throughout the Battle of Britain, including the period 611 was part of the Duxford Wing. On September 15, 1940 Williams shared in the destruction of three Do 17s and on October 11 he shared another. On May 7 1941 he shot down a Bf 109 attacking a British bomber damaged by flak. Williams escorted it back to the English coast at low level. On June 19 he destroyed another Bf 109 and on June 26 he probably destroyed another. He was awarded the DFC on July 15. Tom Williams final score was four confirmed victories. |

No.611 Sqn RAF Country : UK Founded : 10th February 1936 Fate : Disbanded 10th March 1957 West Lancashire (Auxiliary) Beware, beware | No.611 Sqn RAF Formed 10th February 1936, at RAF Hendon. Initially flew Hawker Hart aircraft then Hawker Hinds, before converting to a number of variants of Spitfires throughout the war. During the war, they were present at Dunkirk and fought in the Battle of Britain. The squadron converted to Mustangs in March 1945, but disbanded in August 1945. The squadron reformed in May 1946, again with Spitfires, beforing converting to Meteor jets in May 1951. The squadron finally disbanded on 10th March 1957. | |
