Latest Additions to our Aviation Art Collection

On 8th October 1943, more than 20 B-17 Flying Fortresses took off from Thorpe Abbotts for a raid on the submarine yards at Bremen. Among the aircraft crossing into Europe by mid-afternoon was 23393 LD-Y named <i>Just-a-Snappin'</i>, piloted by Captain E E Blakely and carrying the commander of the operation, Major John B Kidd. Hit by a barrage of flak just as they released their bombs, 7 of the aircaft were taken out and lost. <i>Just-a-Snappin'</i> was also badly damaged, but managed to begin limping home on the two remaining left-side engines. After the flak came the fighters. The gunners of <i>Just-a-Snappin'</i> claimed 12 enemy fighters that day but were officially credited with 9 - even this was a record unsurpassed in the entire war. This painting shows the gunners claiming one of the enemy fighters as they cross the coast of Holland. Over the sea, anything was thrown out to reduce weight - the aircraft struggling to maintain altitude at just above stall speed. They headed for the first airfield they spotted, RAF Ludham in Norfolk. On landing, the shattered plane had no control and slid into the largest of the only two trees on the airfield. When the damage was inspected, more than 800 holes were found in the aircraft. Four of the crew were wounded, with Sgt Lester Saunders later succumbing to his injuries.

A Fairey Albacore of 826 Naval Air Squadron releases its torpedo at the Battle of Cape Matapan, 28th March 1941. With intelligence from deciphered Italian communications aiding them, the British fleet had a distinct advantage from the outset of this battle. However, gaining a torpedo hit on the well protected battleship Vittorio Veneto came at a price - Lt Com Dalyell-Stead and the crew of his Fairey Albacore got close enough to launch their torpedo and damage the battleship, but were killed when their aircraft was brought down by the hail of anti-aircraft fire returned. Ultimately, the battle was a massive British victory with several Italian capital ships sunk, but it was a notable victory for innovation and intelligence, with British ship-borne radar decisive in a night action, and code-breaking by Bletchley Park aiding the British fleet.

Albacore at Cape Matapan by Ivan Berryman.
A prominent aviator in the Battle of the Atlantic, Terry Bulloch flew B-24 Liberators with No.120 Sqn in an anti-submarine role. Already awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for shooting down two German aircraft in a No.206 Sqn Lockheed Hudson over Dunkirk, he was awarded a Bar to this when he sunk U-boat U-597 in October 1942. After another attack, this time sinking U-132 and damaging U-89, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and gained a Bar to this on leaving No.120 Sqn at the end of 1942. Bulloch is seen here on 8th July 1943 in Liberator GR Mk.V BZ721 of No.224 Sqn having completed his hat-trick of U-boat kills, this time sinking U-514 in the Bay of Biscay. This type had been modified by RAF Coastal Command to carry rockets, which Bulloch had used to attack the submarine, finishing it off with depth charges. After the war, Bulloch became an airline pilot, crossing the Atlantic on more than 1,000 occasions. He died in 2014.

Tribute to Terry Bulloch by Ivan Berryman.
In early May 1941, in conditions of strict secrecy because the United States was not yet at war, seventeen pilots of the US Navy had arrived in Britain and been attached to Catalina squadrons of Coastal Command. These experienced PBY pilots were there to assist the Royal Air Force to become familiar with the Catalina, and also to gain operational experience for the US Navy. On 26th May 1941 Catalina Z of No.209 Sqn, commanded by Flying Officer Dennis Briggs RAF, with Ensign Leonard B Smith USN as co-pilot, joined the search for the Bismarck. At 1015 the aircraft was being flown in poor visibility at an altitude of 500ft when Ensign Smith sighted the Bismarck at a range of eight miles. The Catalina was flown towards the contact so that a positive identification could be made and emerged from the cloud only 500 yards from the German ship. The aircraft met a hail of anti-aircraft fire but was able to make its escape. As a result of the sighting report from Catalina Z the Bismarck was again engaged by ships and aircraft of the Royal Navy and was sunk at 1040 on 27th May 1941. Leonard Smith can be considered therefore, the first American to be directly involved in action in World War Two. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (American) for his actions.

It is August 1944, barely two months since the Allies landed their first troops on the beaches of Normandy. After the failed Operation Luttich (codename given to a German counterattack during the Battle of Normandy, which took place around the American positions near Mortain from 7 August to 13 August, 1944 ) The German Panzer Divisions were in full retreat, The British and American Generals believed it to be critical to halt them before they cauld regroup. Caught in the Gap at Falaise, the battle was to be decisive. Flying throughout a continuous onslaught, rocket-firing Typhoons kept up their attacks on the trapped armoured divisions from dawn to dusk. The effect was devastating: at the end of the ten day battle the 100,000 strong German force was decimated. The battle of the Falaise Pocket marked the closing phase of the Battle of Normandy with a decisive German defeat. It is believed that between 80,000 to 100,000 German troops were caught in the encirclement of which 10,000 to 15,000 were killed, 45,000 to 50,000 taken prisoner, and around 20,000 escaped . Shown here are German Tiger I tanks under continues attack by Royal Aoir Force Typhoons.

Delays in Ops for an hour or so allow the crews a chance to light up and have a cup of tea. 101 Squadron based at Ludford Magna were a squadron with a difference, from 1943 the Lancasters were fitted with special radio jamming equipment known as ABC or AirBorne Cigar and carried an eighth crew member known as the special duties operator. Squadron letters were SR and targeted by the Luftwaffe fighters giving 101 Squadron the highest casualty rating in Bomber Command.

The success of the attack on the Möhne dam on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 meant that the remaining three 617 Sqn Lancasters of the First Wave could turn their attention to the Eder, some twelve minutes flying time away. Wing Commander Guy Gibson first called in Flight Lieutenant D J Shannon, flying AJ-L (ED929G) to make the initial run, but he had great difficulty achieving the correct height and approach, so Gibson now ordered Squadron Leader H E Maudslay in AJ-Z (ED937G) to make his run. Again, the aircraft struggled to find the correct height and direction, so Shannon was again brought in, AJ-L finally releasing its <i>Upkeep</i> on the third attempt. The bomb bounced twice before exploding with no visible effect on the dam. Now Maudslay made another attempt, but released his bomb too late. The mine bounced off of the dam wall and exploded in mid air right behind AJ-Z, the Lancaster limping away, damaged, from the scene, only to be shot down on the way home with the loss of all crew. Finally, Pilot Officer Les Knight was called in for one final attempt. AJ-N (ED912G) released its <i>Upkeep</i> perfectly, the mine bouncing three times before striking the dam slightly to the south. In the ensuing explosion, the dam was seen to shake visibly before the masonry began to crumble and a massive breach appeared. With the Möhne and Eder dams both destroyed and the Sorpe demonstrated to be equally vulnerable, <i>Operation Chastise</i> had been a remarkable success and will stand forever as one of the most heroic and audacious attacks in the history of aerial warfare.

At Cranston Fine Arts, we have been publishing aviation art for over two decades.  We have artwork depicting the classic aircraft - Spitfires, Mustangs, Lancasters, Me109s - but we have also made a commitment to commission artwork of less well known aircraft.  This has led to us having the widest selection of aviation art available anywhere.  Just check the aircraft menus opposite to see for yourself!

Our dedication to aviation art is such that we commission more of it than any other publisher.  We have more new releases by more artists than anyone else.  In addition to this, we have acquired the print collection of many artists in recent years, including Gerald Coulson and Robert Tomlin.  Our most significant purchase though, was the entire back catalogue of Nicolas Trudgian prints.  You'll find all remaining prints of Nicolas Trudgian from his days with Military Gallery on this website.  Other websites may advertise them, but we have found that very few actually have the product in stock.

Squadron Aviation Portal

Many of our customers are looking for aviation art related to a specific squadron, usually because a relative once served in it.  We have taken the squadron details of every aviation print in our database where possible and collated the information into an easy menu which you will find opposite.  Most aviation art sites will offer you a few of the famous squadrons - we offer our visitors everything there is.  In addition to the prints, we have supplemented the information with all the available aircraft, pilot, ace, signature and any other data available from our historical databases.

Pilot and aircrew signatures are valuable additions to aviation art prints - adding a connection to the pilots who often flew the aircraft depicted in the image.  The photograph above shows Erich Rudorffer signing an edition of a print recently.  A major Ace in the Luftwaffe, his signature is one of many that are sought after because of the connection to the past.  With the obvious attraction of high scoring German pilots aside, every one of our pilot and aircrew signatures represents a link to a time when every mission was potentially their last.  Bomber crews in the RAF rarely survived their full tour of duty - over 50% of airmen did not return from missions.  In addition to wartime signatures, we also have many signatures from more recent times - Falklands pilots, Iraq and Afghanistan among others.  Our pages show all the prints with the chosen signature, but are also connected to our massive databases of aircraft, squadrons and victories.

Well on the Way to Make History - the Dambusters by David Pentland.

Well on the Way to Make History - the Dambusters by David Pentland.

The most famous raid of the second world war, the audacious Dambusters raid by Lancasters of No.617 Sqn was to wreak havoc in Germanys industrial heartland. Two dams will be destroyed on the raid - the Mohne and the Eder, flooding the valleys below and stopping production in their factories, providing an immeasurable morale boost for those back home. Here, two of the modified bombers pass windmills on the Dutch canals as they make their way to the first target, their almighty roar shattering the stillness and disturbing some of the local wildlife. As they approach Germany in the moonlight, the bombers are well on the way to make history.

Eagle Strike by Simon Atack.

Eagle Strike by Simon Atack.

Flying his Messerschmitt Me109G6, Major Gunther Rall, Group Commander of II./JG11 with over 200 air victories already to his credit, clashes with a P-47 Thunderbolt of the 63rd Sqn, 56th Fighter Group high over the Rhine south of Koblenz, May 12, 1944. Led by Colonel Hub Zemke, the 56th Fighter Group played advance guard to a deep penetration bomber raid to central Germany. As his forty eight P-47 Thunderbolts arrived to sweep the sky around the Koblenz - Frankfurt area, the Me109s of II./JG11 pounced from a 5000 feet height advantage. Simon Atacks high-impact painting shows Major Gunther Rall bringing down Hub Zemkes wingman, the first of two victories he claimed before himself being brought down by 56th Fighter Group P-47s later in the combat. Gunther Rall returned to combat flying, commanding JG300 until the end of hostilities by which time, with 275 air victories, he became the third highest scoring Ace in history.
