Tribute to Maresciallo Ennio Tarantola by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Having already scored his first victory by shooting down an I-15 during the Spanish Civil War, Ennio Tarantola was to survive World War II with a total of eleven victories. His involvement in the Second World War began, however, as one of the elite dive bomber force, 102° Gruppo 'Bombardamento a Tuffo' which was made up of 209a and 239a Squadriglie, flying Junkers JU-87 Stukas. It was Tarantola who scored a direct hit on the destroyer HMAS Waterhen on 24th June 1941, as shown here, crippling the ship and leaving it foundering to be finished off by subsequent German air raids.

The Final Flight by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Final Flight by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On 31st May 1954, Saunders-Roe's beautiful SR.45 Princess flying boat made her final flight, taking off from the Cowes Roads for a short test flight for radio checks and to investigate how the ten-engine giant responded to engine cuts. By all accounts, the tests passed without incident and this graceful machine returned to her slipway at the East Cowes works, never to take to the air again. Orders for this extraordinary aircraft failed to materialise and G-ALUN and her two sister airframes were eventually scrapped at Calshot.

Tribute to Walter Krupinski by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Originally flying Me109s with JG52 at the end of the Battle of Britain, Walter Krupinski then transferred to the Eastern Front and had scored more than 50 victories by the end of 1942, earning him the Knight's Cross. He took on a young and struggling Erich Hartmann and tutored him in aerial combat - Hartmann went on to become the leading Ace in history with 352 victories. Commanding 7.JG52 in 1943, Krupinski scored 11 victories in a single day. In the spring of 1944 he went west for the defence of Germany, commanding units in JG5, JG26 and JG11. He was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross and in March 1945 joined the famous JV44 flying Me262 jets until the end of the war. In more than 1100 missions he was credited with 197 victories. He is seen here flying Bf.109 G-2 Yellow 5 of 6/JG52 over Russia in October 1942. He later flew with the reformed German Air Force after the war, and flew the F-104 Starfighter. He died in 2000.

The Hunted and the Hunter by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Hunted and the Hunter by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The attack by Leutnant Walter Briegleb and his crew on Lancaster Mk.III ND960 DX-I of No.57 Sqn early on 22nd May 1944. Flying Me110 with codes D5+BV with his crew of Feldwebel Walter Bräunlich and Bordfunker Feldwebel Brandt, Briegleb flew undetected beneath the bomber and used the deadly 'Schräge Musik' - upward firing cannon - to hit the fuel tanks in the port wing between the fuselage and inner engine. Pulling away, he watched the aircraft burn and could see both gunners in their turrets but no return fire came. He wondered why none of the crew escaped by parachute with the bomber doomed - it disintegrated in the air over the coast of the island of Fyn, Denmark, impacting near Emtekær at 00:44hrs.

All of the crew were killed :
Flight Lieutenant Arthur Richards (Pilot)
Flying Officer William Woodall (Navigator)
Pilot Officer Athur Bugden (Flight Engineer)
Sergeant Thomas Edwards (Wireless Operator)
Flying Officer George Ferguso.........

A Moment of Compassion by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A Moment of Compassion by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On December 20th 1943, Lt. Charlie Brown of the USAAF was flying his first mission as aircraft commander of B-17, "Ye Olde Pub" on a bombing raid over Bremen. The B-17's port wing was damaged by flak, necessitating an engine shutdown. The aircraft was aggressively attacked by Luftwaffe fighters that tore the B-17 to shreds, killing and wounding a number of her crew. As the aircraft limped toward the German coast, a single Messerschmitt Bf 109 piloted by Franz Stigler approached the crippled bomber and, seeing the incredible damage inflicted on it, made the decision not to attack, but to escort0 the B-17 across the English Channel. Part way, the Bf 109 banked away and Brown's aircraft was met by some P.47s that escorted Ye Olde Pub home. Stigler had risked everything in this act of compassion and his story remained a secret until the end of the war. In 1990, Charlie Brown finally tracked down Franz Stigler and the two pilots became the closest of friends, right up until.........
