Sous-Lieutenant Willy Coppens - Roasting A Sausage by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Sous-Lieutenant Willy Coppens - Roasting A Sausage by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

During an amazing spree of balloon-busting during 1918, Willy Coppens gained notoriety over the Western Front for his sheer daring and marksmanship, sending no fewer than 35 observation balloons plummeting to the ground, as well as two aircraft. Here, Coppens despatches a Drachen balloon flying his modified Hanriot HD.1 No23 which he had painted blue because he so disliked the ugly, bad camouflage in which it was delivered. Despite losing a leg whilst downing his final two balloons, Coppens survived the war and lived a full life until his death in December 1986.

Captain Robert Little by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Captain Robert Little by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

With a final 47 victories to his credit, Robert Alexander Little was one of the highest-scoring British aces of World War 1, beginning his career with the famous No 8 (Naval) Squadron in 1916, flying Sopwith Pup N5182, as shown here. On 21st April 1917, he was attacked and shot down by six aircraft of Jasta Boelke, Little being thrown from the cockpit of his Sopwith Camel on impact with the ground. As the German aircraft swooped in to rake the wreckage with machine gun fire, Little pulled his Webley from its holster and began returning fire before being assisted by British infantry with their Lewis guns. Such was the character of this great pilot who finally met his death whilst attacking Gotha bombers on the night of 27th May 1918.

Flight Lieutenant R L G Marix by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Flight Lieutenant R L G Marix by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On 8th October 1914, war in the air changed forever with what would become the first successful strategic bombing raid on Germany. As bad weather threatened to frustrate their mission, two little Sopwith Tabloids took off in search of the giant Zeppelin sheds at Cologne and Dusseldorf, one piloted by Squadron Commander D A Spenser Grey and the other by Flight Lieutenant Reggie Marix. Grey was beaten by poor visibility and instead chose to bomb the railway station at Cologne whilst Marix located the primary target and bombed it at once from a height of just 600ft. Almost immediately, the mighty LZ.25 that was housed inside began to burn and then blew up spectacularly, the fireball threatening to engulf Marixs Tabloid. Both Marix and Grey were awarded the Distinguished Service Order for their efforts. The age of aerial bombing had arrived.

Close Combat by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Close Combat by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Whilst flying with A Flight of 85 Squadron on 30th July 1940, Geoffrey Allard encountered a pair of Messerschmitt Bf.110s about 40 miles from the coast, apparently patrolling near a convoy. After Squadron Leader Townsend, flying Red 1, had made two unsuccessful attacks, Allard closed to 150 yards and began to fire continuously, eventually closing to just 25 yards, whereupon the starboard engine of the Bf.110 began to disintegrate. This was just one of eight victories that Allard claimed during the Battle of Britain to add to a previous eight that he had scored flying Hurricanes during the Battle of France.

Angels of Malta - Faith, Hope and Charity by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Angels of Malta - Faith, Hope and Charity by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Although key to the allied campaign in the Mediterranean, Malta was virtually undefended against air raids in the early part of the Second World War. Just four Gloster Sea Gladiators, packed in crates, were deposited on the island by HMS Glorious, these aircraft originally intended for operations in Norway. Three of them were hurriedly assembled, the fourth being held in reserve, and were instantly engaged in fierce fighting against Italian raiders. Nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, their determined pilots fought for seventeen days without relief, their achievements playing a major part in fooling the Italian intelligence into thinking that this crucial Mediterranean outpost was much more heavily defended than it really was.

On the night of 28th / 29th May 1942, Beaufighter X7583, piloted by Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek with Sgt Kovaric as navigator, intercepted a lone Dornier Do217 off the coast of Norfolk, sending it plunging into the North Sea after a 20 minute chase. This was the first of Bobek's victories for 68 Sqn which was made up almost entirely of Czech exiles, the squadron being based at High Ercall. Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek would go on to become an Ace with 5 confirmed victories.

The Blackest Friday by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Blackest Friday by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Following intelligence reports that the German destroyer Z.33 was anchored in Forde Fjord, Norway, together with a selection of minesweepers, tugs and trawlers, Beaufighters of 144, 404 and 455 Sqns were at once scrambled to attack the shipping, fully expecting their assault to take the Germans by surprise. Quite the contrary transpired to be true however and the attacking Beaufighters had to fly through a hail of flak and anti aircraft fire to line up on their targets. Moreover, Focke-Wulf 190s of 9/JG 5 joined the melee and a frantic battle ensued. Here, one Beaufighter has become a victim of an Fw.190, whilst a 144 Sqn aircraft tries to make a low level escape, close to the forbidding Fjord rock face.

The Defence of Napoli by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Defence of Napoli by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Spring of 1943 saw intense bombing raids on the Italian port city of Naples by American B.24s and the Italian pilots responded with spirited attacks on the Liberators, flying from their nearby base of Capodichino. Just entering service with 22° Gruppo was the new Reggiane Re.2005 fighter, one of which can be seen here rolling away after a head-on attack on the bomber formation. A 22° Gruppo Macchi 202 has just damaged a B.24 in the distance.

Black Buck Buddies by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Black Buck Buddies by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

It is ironic that, just as the RAF were beginning to retire or re-assign their ageing force of V-bombers, the situation in the Falkland Islands called for a long-distance bombing mission to disable the runway at Port Stanley which now threatened to become an operational fighter base for the Argentine Air Force. Flying a round trip of some 8,000 miles, it was necessary for Avro Vulcan XM607 to refuel several times from a fleet of Victor tankers who themselves had to be refueled in an extraordinary relay operation, a remarkable example of planning, navigation and airmanship. Under the code name 'Black Buck', seven such missions were carried out, using bombs and missiles fired from hastily fitted pylons beneath the Vulcan's wings. Here, a Vulcan edges slowly toward the drogue to receive fuel from a Victor K.Mk2.

Tribute to Friedrich Noltenius by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Studying medicine at the outbreak of World War One, Friedrich Noltenius was a decorated artillery soldier by the time he started flying missions in mid-1918. Flying with Jasta 27, he scored 13 victories before transferring to Jasta 6 in September 1918. A noted balloon buster, he is shown here in his personalised Fokker D.VII of Jasta 6 during October 1918. Scoring a total of 21 victories by the end of the war, his 20th entitled him to the award of the Blue Max to add to his Württemberg Knight's Cross, but the end of the war prevented him from receiving it. After the war he returned to medicine and became a doctor, but was killed in a flying accident in 1936.
