Short Stirling N6086 MacRobert's Reply of 15 Sqn is shown during the bombing raid on the French Harbour of Brest on 18th December 1941. British bombers had been dispatched to bomb the German battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst that were docked there, an action that earned N6086's skipper Fl Off Peter Boggis a DFC. Stirling W7428 is also shown with her port wing ablaze, one of two Stirlings lost on this operation. SOE Drop by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Halifax B.II Series 1 (Special) JP254 of 148 Special Duties Squadron, RAF is depicted over the drop zone near to the Alt Aussee salt mine in the Austrian Alps as two of the four SOE agents exit the bomber via the crew access door. Their mission was to secure and protect 6,755 items of the world's greatest works of art that had been looted and stored by the Germans as they swept across Europe. With the allied forces closing in, the Germans had planned to blow up the entire store to prevent the artworks from falling into the hands of the liberators. Once on the ground, the four agents linked up with local resistance fighters and the mine and its valuable contents were eventually secured, the explosives made safe and the entire cache taken into the safe keeping of the 80th US Infantry Division as the German occupation of Europe crumbled.

Leutnant Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Leutnant Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Aircraft of Jasta 10 prepare to taxi out for a dawn patrol, led by the fearless Leutnant Werner Voss in his Fokker F1 103/17 in September 1917. Arguments still rage concerning the colour of the engine cowling on his Triplane. Certainly, when the aircraft was delivered, its upper surfaces were painted factory finish streaked green and, it is recorded that it was flown as delivered with Voss personal mechanic noting that no extra painting was undertaken, aside from Voss Japanese kite face which occupied the nose. However, research shows that by the time of Voss death on 23rd September 1917, after his epic battle with SE5s of 56 Sqn, the cowling was probably yellow in keeping with all Jasta 10 aircraft. Renowned by pilots from both sides for his bravery and extraordinary abilities with his diminutive Triplane, the young ace scored a total of 48 confirmed victories before being brought down by Lieutenant Rhys Davids on the very day that he was due to go on leave. The Fokker F1 differed .........

Hannes Trautloft is one of the Luftwaffes great fighter leaders, scoring his first air victory in the Spanish Civil War in August 1936. Returning to Germany in 1937 he joined the national aerobatics team flying the Me109. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Hannes took command of I./JG20 taking part in the Battle of Britain, before moving to the Balkans as Kommodore of JG54. Now leading the group on the Russian Front, JG54 took part in the heavy fighting, first in the Me109, then the Fw190. In the summer of 1943 Hannes Trautloft joined General Gallands staff. As a mutineer he was sacked by Goering, thus ending an illustrious combat career comprising 550 combat missions and 57 aerial victories.

Veterans of the Med by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Veterans of the Med by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Alone in the aerial defence of Malta in the early part of WW2, these three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, saw such intense action against the invading Italian air force that the enemy's commanders were convinced that a much bigger force existed on Malta. They are depicted here making a low pass over the destroyer HMS Dainty as she heads out of Grand Harbour from Sliema Creek. Herself a veteran of much action in the early part of the war, HMS Dainty was lost to dive bombers off Tobruk on 24th February 1941.

Dambusters - The First Wave by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

En route to the dams of the Ruhr Valley, the first wave of three specially adapted Avro Lancasters roar across the Dutch wetlands on the night of 16 -17th May 1943 led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, their mission to breach the Mohne and Eder dams, thus robbing the German war machine of valuable hydro-electric power and disrupting the water supply to the entire area. Carrying their unique, Barnes Wallis designed 'Bouncing Bomb' and flying at just 30m above the ground to avoid radar detection, 617 Squadron's Lancasters forged their way into the enemy territories, following the canals of the Netherlands and flying through forest fire traps below treetop height to their targets. Gibson's aircraft ('G'-George) is nearest with 'M'-Mother of Fl/Lt Hopgood off his port wing and 'P'-Peter (Popsie) of Fl/Lt Martin in the distance.

The Eder Breaks by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Eder Breaks by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The success of the attack on the Möhne dam on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 meant that the remaining three 617 Sqn Lancasters of the First Wave could turn their attention to the Eder, some twelve minutes flying time away. Wing Commander Guy Gibson first called in Flight Lieutenant D J Shannon, flying AJ-L (ED929G) to make the initial run, but he had great difficulty achieving the correct height and approach, so Gibson now ordered Squadron Leader H E Maudslay in AJ-Z (ED937G) to make his run. Again, the aircraft struggled to find the correct height and direction, so Shannon was again brought in, AJ-L finally releasing its Upkeep on the third attempt. The bomb bounced twice before exploding with no visible effect on the dam. Now Maudslay made another attempt, but released his bomb too late. The mine bounced off of the dam wall and exploded in mid air right behind AJ-Z, the Lancaster limping away, damaged, from the scene, only to be shot down on the way home with the los.........

The Long Way Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Long Way Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On the night of 12/13th August 1942, Short Stirling RF325 was attacked by a Bf.110 night fighter over the Ardennes in Belgium whilst returning from a bombing raid. Damaged and low on fuel, Sqn Ldr G A Watt nursed his stricken aircraft across the English Channel before making a forced landing at Broadstairs in Kent. This was a scenario faced by hundreds of Bomber Command aircrew throughout World War II and this painting is intended as a tribute to them all, symbolising the loneliness and vulnerability of the heavy bomber as it went about its unenviable task on an almost nightly basis and in the face of impossible odds.

Tribute to Ltn d R Josef Jacobs by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Shown here is the unusual aircraft Fokker D.II 541/16 of Ace Ltn d R Josef Jacobs painted in a blue colour in October 1916. According to his diary of this time when Fokkerstaffel West was transitioning to Jasta 12, he was ill but was given permission to drive to Chauny where he found his aircraft had been painted in this colour scheme. Jacobs was a high scoring Ace of World War One - his official 48 victories putting him in the top 5 Axis pilots. He survived the war and lived to the age of 84.

Tribute to Manfred von Richthofen by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The legendary Red Baron would score 80 confirmed victories in World War One, making him the conflict's top Ace. It was in a Fokker Dr.I - as depicted here - that he scored his final two victories, claiming two Sopwith Camels on 20th April 1918. It was in the same aircraft on the following day that he was shot down and killed. There are few pilots who gain such cultural significance as the Red Baron, still widely known more than a century after the events that gave him fame.

Tribute to Helmut Lent by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Joining the Luftwaffe in 1936, Helmut Lent flew Me110s with ZG76, claiming victories in the invasion of Poland. It was as a night-fighter pilot that he excelled - the second highest scoring night Ace in history - scoring more than 100 victories for which he was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. He scored victories from 1941 to 1944 with NJG1, NJG2 and NJG3 before he was fatally wounded in an accident when the Ju88 he was transporting struck overhead wires on a hastily prepared makeshift runway as he came in to land. He is depicted here in his Me110 G4 approaching a Lancaster over France in 1943.
