(PC) On the night of 12th September 1944, Lancaster NF958 (LS-M) of No.15 Sqn was lost in the skies above Mannheim when it was attacked by the Messerschmitt Bf.110G-2 of Ofw Ludwig Schmidt of II/NGJ 6, the bomber receiving hits to the bomb bay which ignited the incendiaries still in their racks. Five of the crew bailed out and were taken prisoner of war once captured. The pilot, F/O Norman Overend RNZAF, did not escape the aircraft. (PC) When the RAF took delivery of their first Consolidated B.24 Liberators in 1941, aerial cover for trans-Atlantic convoys was strengthened, affording these brave merchant ships a modicum of protection as they forged their slow passage from the US to Britain with vital supplies. 120 Sqn was immediately pressed into this role from their initial base at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, before moving to Ballykelly and Reykjavik in Iceland as the U-Boat threat increased. (PC) With the Battle of Britain at its height and the RAF stretched to breaking point, September of 1940 was a desperate time for the young pilots who fought gallantly to defend the UK against an imminent invasion. Among those brave few was the eighteen year old Geoffrey Wellum, shown here destroying a Heinkel He.111 on 11th September in Spitfire 1a K9998. Carried to their target by 18 Valettas and 9 Hastings of RAF Transport Command, and supported by air strikes by Fleet Air Arm Sea Venoms and Seahawks they quickly succeeded in securing their objective. (PC) The highest scoring Sopwith Camel ace of World War 1, Donald MacLaren was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1893. Joining the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 as a trainee pilot, it was only the following March that he claimed his first victory, a Hannover C-Type whilst posted to 46 Squadron. His kill rate was quite formidable for, in this the final year of the war, he was to claim no fewer than 54 confirmed victories. Indeed, in the period from 15th September to 2nd October, he claimed eight Fokker D.VIIs - a remarkable feat against Germanys most potent fighter. He is pictured here attacking a D.VII in Camel F2137 U of 46 Sqn. MacLaren survived the war and died in 1989. Item Code : DHM1661 Donald MacLaren by Ivan Berryman. Chasing him is Major Hans Trubenbach of 1 Gruppe, Lehrgeschwader 2 in his Messerschmitt Vf109E-3 (Red 12) . The encounter lasted eight minutes with both pilots surviving. (PC) At 3.30am on the 23rd June 1945, a Dakota of 357 (special duties) Squadron took off from Mingaladon airfield nr. Rangoon , to travel the 600 miles, 300 of them behind enemy lines, to rescue a downed American Liberator crew deep in the jungles of Siam . The Dakota was flown by pilot Fl Lt. Larry Lewis, who already held the DFM awarded to him for 33 ops as a rear gunner on Wellingtons in 1941. Two crews had already failed when Lewis was asked to attempt this hazardous mission. Flying between 5,000 - 6,000ft he flew over The Hump, a ridge of mountains running down the spine of Burma . Local villagers had cleared a rough airstrip 800yds long with Lewis finding it by the time dawn broke. With monsoon clouds gathering, the Liberator crew aboard and the Dakota sinking in the wet ground, he managed, just, to get airborne. (PC) With 39 confirmed victories to his credit, Major John Gilmour is also recognised as the joint highest scoring pilot on the Martinsyde G.100 Elephant, an unusual score given the poor performance of this aircraft in one-on-one combat. He was awarded the DSO, MC and 2 Bars during the course of his flying career and in 1917 was posted to 65 Squadron as Flight Commander flying Sopwith Camels. On 1st July 1918, he downed three Fokker D.VIIs, a Pfalz and an Albatros D.V in the space of just 45 minutes. In 1918 he was promoted to the rank of major and posted to command 28 Squadron in Italy, staying with the trusty Camel, but he did not add further to his score, although his final un-confirmed total may have been as high as 44. He is depicted here claiming his second kill on 24th September 1916 when he destroyed a Fokker E.1 whilst flying Elephant No 7284. More Text... Shown here in his Nieuport 28, he scored 4 of his victories flying this aircraft before taking over command of 147th Pursuit Squadron flying a Spad S.XIII in July and scoring his final 4 victories. He died of pneumonia in 1936 but had top American flying Ace Eddie Rickenbacker as a pallbearer, a former colleague from the 94th Pursuit Squadron. More Text... Item Code : DHM6697 Tribute to Lt. (PC) Captain Howard J T Saint was a Welsh flying Ace who claimed 7 victories between August and October 1917 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He is shown here in his personal aircraft, Sopwith Triplane N6295 'B' in August 1917 - the aircraft in which he claimed a reconnaissance aircraft on the 21st and an Albatros D.V on the 25th, his 3rd and 4th victories. He claimed a further 3 victories while flying Sopwith Camels before becoming a test pilot, continuing a career in aviation until his retirement. He died in 1976 at the age of 83. More Text... (PC) Italian Ace Giovanni Ancillotto scored a total of eleven victories during the Great War. This total includes two pioneering night-fighter victories in the summer of 1918. He is best known for his third balloon-busting victory in late 1917, however, during which his Nieuport 11 was severely damaged as he pressed home his attack with rockets, collecting much of the burning balloon with his aircraft. He is shown here during a previous balloon-busting victory with the empty launch tubes of 8 Le Prieur rockets testament to the fate of the enemy balloon. (PC) Mosquito HP926 SB-C Charlie of No.464 Sqn RAAF gets airborne from Hunsdon on 28th February 1944. The crew, Flying Officer David Avery RNZAF and Warrant Officer Leslie Brodie RAAF are shown embarking on what would be an eventful 'Noball' mission over France. The aircraft was damaged by flak with sections of the tailplane and rudder shot away, but with remarkable skill, Flying Officer Avery wrestled the aircraft back across the Channel. The doomed Mosquito was aimed back towards the sea before the crew took to their parachutes near Chichester, and it crashed harmlessly. More Text...
